Best first choice

Individual skins. It uses all 12 players in one simple pool, so nobody needs a new opponent or partner and the group can settle one hole at a time. It also scales better than a single Nassau because six separate matches or three team matches would otherwise require separate pairings, scorekeeping and house rules.

What to agree before play

A 12-player skins pool needs a written tie and carryover rule, because a tied hole can otherwise create a dispute over the next pot. Twelve players should not be treated as one playing group; use separate tee times or starting groups and nominate a scorer for the shared settlement. Nassau, Wolf and points games are casual arrangements rather than one universal Rules of Golf format, so agree the stake, handicap basis, presses and tie treatment before starting.

Table

Game or arrangementWhy it fits
Individual skins Put all 12 players in one pot so every hole has a clear shared result, with carryover and tie rules agreed before tee-off.
Six singles Nassaus Pair the 12 players into six separate 1-v-1 matches, keeping each match readable while the whole group shares a tee time or split starts.
Three four-ball Nassaus Make three pairs of partners and run one 2-v-2 Nassau per match, which gives 12 players a team contest without pretending all 12 are one side.
Wolf pods Run three concurrent four-player Wolf games with a fixed rotation inside each pod; this keeps decisions and settlements manageable, but the three pods need agreed equal stakes.
Team skins Divide the field into three teams of four and award each hole's agreed stake to the lowest team score, with ties and carryovers written down before play.
Bingo Bango Bongo points Use a clearly stated house points pot for first on the green, closest to the hole and first holed, with a marker recording the points rather than relying on memory.

Worked example

Illustrative only: 12 players each contribute $2 per hole to individual skins, creating a $24 hole pool and a maximum $36 round pool over 18 holes. Alex wins hole 1 for $2, Ben wins hole 2 for $2, and Chris and Dana tie hole 3, so its $2 carries; if Alex wins hole 4 outright, Alex receives the $4 carried skin. The group must still record whether any unclaimed final-hole pot is carried, split or donated under its house rule.

Common questions

What is the simplest betting game for 12 golfers?

Individual skins is usually the easiest arrangement: all 12 players contribute the agreed amount per hole, and the lowest score wins that hole's pot. Decide in advance whether ties carry the pot, split it, or use another house rule.

Can 12 golfers play a Nassau?

Yes, but not as one 12-player match. Pair the group into six singles matches or three four-ball matches, then state whether the front nine, back nine and overall 18 are separate bets and whether presses are allowed.

How should handicaps be handled in a 12-player betting game?

Use the format's agreed Playing Handicap method rather than inventing a percentage. WHS Appendix C recommends 100% for individual match play and 90% for four-ball match play; in match play, the lowest Playing Handicap normally plays from zero and the others receive the differences.

Do the Rules of Golf set the stake for skins or Nassau?

No. Skins, Nassau, Wolf and similar side games are casual betting arrangements. The Rules of Golf can govern the underlying play where appropriate, but the group must set its own stake, payout, tie, carryover and press terms.

Can all 12 players play in one group?

Do not plan on one 12-player tee group. Use the club's permitted group size and separate tee times or starting groups, then nominate a shared scorer or use a written score sheet for the betting settlement.

What should we agree before a 12-player game starts?

Write down the game, players or teams, dollar amount, handicap method, tie and carryover treatment, presses, concessions and final-hole settlement. Clear terms matter more than adding extra side bets.
