Best first choice

Four-ball skins. Four pairs give all eight golfers a clear partner, while the low-score side result keeps the betting pool more manageable than eight separate scorecards. Use a written stake, carry rule and handicap decision before play; if the pool is handicap-based, do not assume a standard skins allowance applies because casual skins is not itself a WHS format.

What to agree before play

Eight individual scores make an all-player skins pool slow and increase scorekeeping errors. Casual games such as skins, Wolf and Bingo Bango Bongo have house rules, so tie carries, point events, presses and forfeits must be agreed before the first tee. Splitting eight golfers into two matches or pods can create unequal handicaps or uneven playing time unless partners and rotations are set in advance.

Table

Game or arrangementWhy it fits
Four-ball skins Make four pairs and award each hole's agreed stake to the pair with the lowest score, carrying ties under a written house rule.
Team skins Split eight golfers into two teams of four and settle a hole-by-hole pool using a pre-agreed team score and tie rule.
Nassau four-ball Run two separate 2-v-2 four-ball matches at the same time, with front-nine, back-nine and overall bets agreed before tee-off.
Two-pod Wolf Run two independent four-player Wolf games so each pod has a manageable rotation and settlement.
Two-pod Bingo Bango Bongo Run the points game in two four-player pods, with the group agreeing the three point events and the value of each point.
Eight-player individual skins Keep every golfer in one skins pool, with carries for ties; it is simple to explain but usually slower to score.

Worked example

Illustrative house example: four pairs play four-ball skins for $2 per hole. On hole 1, Alex and Ben record 5 and 4, Chris and Dana 5 and 5, and the other two pairs record 6 and 5 and 5 and 6; Chris and Dana win the hole with the lowest side score of 5 only if the agreed comparison is net and their net 4 is unique. If two pairs tie for the lowest agreed score, the $2 carries, so a later hole worth $4 is paid to the sole winner. The score and carry rule are editorial examples, not official historical results.

Common questions

Can eight golfers play skins in one group?

They can agree to do so, but eight individual scores usually slow play and make the pool harder to audit. Four pairs in four-ball skins or two four-player pods are more practical arrangements; neither is a separate Rules of Golf competition format by default.

What is the best betting game for eight golfers with mixed handicaps?

Four-ball skins is a practical first choice because partners contribute their better score on each hole. If you use handicaps, state whether the game is gross or net and obtain the allowance from the competition organiser or handicap authority; do not copy the four-ball match-play percentage automatically into casual skins.

How should a tie be settled in an eight-player betting game?

Write the rule before play. Common house arrangements include carrying the stake to the next hole, splitting it equally among tied sides, or cancelling that hole's bet; the choice is editorial and should be transparent to everyone.

Can eight golfers play Nassau?

Yes, but the clean arrangement is two simultaneous 2-v-2 four-ball matches, each with its own front-nine, back-nine and overall settlement. Do not describe all eight as one official Nassau match unless the group has defined how the sides and comparisons work.

Are skins, Wolf and Bingo Bango Bongo official Rules of Golf formats?

No automatic official status should be assumed for these casual betting games. The Rules of Golf can govern the underlying round when applicable, while the betting events, points, carries and stakes remain house terms agreed by the group.

What stake should eight golfers use?

Use a small, openly agreed dollar amount that every player accepts, such as $2 per hole in the worked illustration. MatchPlay should show examples as optional editorial scenarios, not odds, bookmaker advice or a required payment.
