Best first choice
Individual Stableford. It gives all ten players a direct result without forcing an arbitrary five-versus-five pairing, and Rule 21.1 provides the recognised points framework. It also gives the group a simple pace option because a player may stop once a hole can no longer produce a point, while a formal handicap competition can use the applicable WHS allowance set by the Committee.
What to agree before play
Do not send ten golfers as one group: use separate tee times or smaller groups, then combine the results A five-player scramble or other unusual team game has no automatic WHS allowance in Appendix C; publish the calculation or play it as a clearly labelled house game Without written rules, skins carryovers, Wolf selection turns, ties and team score-counting can produce disputes, so settle those points before the first tee
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Individual Stableford | All ten players can compete in one points table, with zero-point holes allowing a practical pick-up rule under Rule 21.1 |
| 10-player skins | Keep every player in one individual pool and settle each hole or carryover under written house rules, so nobody is left without a result |
| Five singles match-play matches | Pair the ten players into five head-to-head matches and score the event by match points, making the group a team competition rather than one ten-player match |
| Five-pair four-ball stroke play | Create five two-player sides; each side records the lower partner score on each hole and the sides can be ranked in a net or gross field |
| Two five-player teams | Use Rule 24 team competition terms, appoint captains and count an agreed number of individual scores or match points; this is an event arrangement, not a new Rules-defined format |
| Wolf rotation | Run an informal individual-versus-partner choice game across ten players, with the organiser publishing the selection, order and tie rules before play; the turns will not be equal in every short round |
Worked example
Illustrative Stableford round: on a par-4 hole, Alex makes a net 4 and receives 2 points while Ben makes a net 5 and receives 1 point; after 18 holes Alex has 34 points and Dana 31, so Alex wins the ten-player points table. If this is a formal individual Stableford handicap competition, the Committee may apply the WHS Appendix C recommended 95% allowance to the unrounded Course Handicap before calculating Playing Handicap.

Common questions
Can ten golfers play a single match against each other?
Not as one ordinary head-to-head match under the usual match-play model. Match play is between a player or players and opponent or opponents; for ten people, use five separate matches or choose a field game such as Stableford, skins or four-ball. Schedule smaller groups rather than putting ten players in one tee-time group.
What is the easiest game for exactly 10 players?
Individual Stableford is usually the cleanest choice: everyone has an individual points total and the organiser does not need to create permanent teams. Publish the target-score, handicap, tie and pick-up terms before play; Rule 21.1 is the recognised Stableford framework, while local event terms still matter.
How should handicaps work for ten-player games?
There is no single ten-player allowance. Use the allowance for the actual format and the Committee's Terms of the Competition. WHS Appendix C recommends 95% for individual Stableford, 90% for four-ball match play, 85% for four-ball stroke play and 50% of combined team handicap for foursomes; the allowance is applied to the unrounded Course Handicap, not directly to Handicap Index.
Can we make two teams of five and call it a scramble?
You can run a five-player scramble as an agreed house game, but do not present it as having an official WHS allowance: Appendix C lists two-, three- and four-player scramble recommendations, not five-player scramble. Write the selection, score and handicap method into the event terms, or use a recognised five-pair four-ball arrangement instead.
How do ten players handle skins fairly?
Agree the stake, whether a tied low score carries over, whether handicaps are used and how a final carryover is paid. Those are event terms for a casual side game, not a universal Rules of Golf format. A written example such as '$2 per player per hole, with tied holes carrying over' prevents a dispute.
Do ten players need separate tee times?
Usually, yes. Ten players are too many for a normal four-ball group, and a large moving group can delay players behind. Book smaller groups, keep the same scoring sheet or app for the event, and combine the results after the round; this is a practical pace recommendation, not a measured rule claim.
