Best first choice
Four-ball stroke play. It keeps all ten players in one field while giving each pair the security of a partner's score on every hole. It also has a specific 85% WHS recommendation, so the organiser can set handicaps consistently rather than inventing a ten-player allowance.
What to agree before play
Do not apply a five-player or ten-player scramble percentage: the WHS table gives recommendations for two-, three- and four-player scrambles, so ten players should be split into twosomes and the event terms must say so. Do not confuse five pairs with one ten-player side: four-ball and foursomes are partner formats, so define whether pairs play head-to-head or against the field. A 10-player field can be slow if everyone watches every partner ball; use ready-to-play procedures and separate tee times where the course or competition terms require them.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Singles match-play ladder or five simultaneous matches | Uses ten individual handicaps and the WHS 100% individual match-play recommendation; run the ladder over successive rounds or pair players for one round. |
| Individual net Stableford | Ten players compete in one field using individual Stableford scoring and the WHS 95% recommendation for individual Stableford; it avoids forcing unequal teams. |
| Four-ball match play | Make five pairs and stage a set of head-to-head matches or a pair-versus-field competition; each player plays their own ball and the lower net score for each side counts, with a 90% match-play recommendation. |
| Four-ball stroke play | Five pairs play in one field, recording the lower net score from each pair on each hole; the WHS recommendation is 85% for four-ball stroke play. |
| Foursomes match play | Five pairs can play a scheduled match-play programme or a pair-versus-field event; partners alternate shots with one ball and the recommended allowance is 50% of combined team handicap. |
| Two-player scramble | Split the ten players into five twosomes; each pair selects the preferred result after each stroke, but publish the event's own scramble procedure and use the WHS 35% low plus 15% high recommendation for a two-player scramble. |
Worked example
Illustrative singles match: Alex has a Course Handicap of 10 and Ben 18. With the WHS recommended 100% individual match-play allowance, Alex plays from zero and Ben receives 8 strokes, allocated on the eight lowest stroke-index holes; this is a worked example, not real player data.

Common questions
What is the fairest handicap game for 10 golfers?
There is no single universal answer, but four-ball stroke play is a practical choice when ten golfers can form five pairs. The WHS recommendation is 85% for four-ball stroke play; the Committee should put the allowance in the Terms of the Competition.
Can 10 golfers play a handicap match-play game?
Yes. Pair the group into five simultaneous matches, or use a staged ladder or round robin. For individual match play, the recommended allowance is 100%; in each match, the lowest Playing Handicap normally plays off zero and the others receive the difference.
How do handicaps work in a two-player scramble for 10 golfers?
Create five two-player teams rather than one ten-player team. The WHS Appendix C recommendation for a two-player scramble is 35% of the lower Course Handicap plus 15% of the higher; the Committee must publish the competition procedure and allowance.
Can all 10 golfers play foursomes?
They can play as five pairs, with each pair using one ball and alternating strokes. Foursomes may be match play or stroke play, and the WHS recommended allowance is 50% of the combined team handicap; agree whether pairs face opponents or the field.
Should a club use the WHS percentages without checking anything else?
Treat them as recommendations, not an automatic house rule. The national association, regional body or club may set the allowance, and the Committee should specify it in the Terms of the Competition; field size and composition can affect the decision.
Do ten golfers need to play in one group?
No. Ten is the field size, not a recommended group size. Use the club's permitted groupings and separate tee times when needed, while keeping the same published format and handicap method for everyone.
