Best first choice
Three-ball match play. It is the cleanest handicap game for exactly three because each player has two simultaneous head-to-head matches rather than an artificial two-versus-one team. Rule 21.4 recognises three-ball match play, while WHS Appendix C gives individual match play a 100% recommended allowance and says the lowest Playing Handicap plays off zero relative to the others.
What to agree before play
Do not treat a casual skins, Nassau or other side game as having an automatic WHS allowance; agree the settlement and handicap method before teeing off. In match play, calculate the relative differences correctly: the lowest Playing Handicap is zero and the others receive the difference, rather than each player receiving their full handicap against the course. A three-player scramble is a team format with a recommended 30/20/10 allowance, not an individual 95% allowance; confirm the committee's Terms of the Competition and the rounding procedure.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Three-ball match play | Each player plays an individual match against the other two at the same time, with the lowest Playing Handicap off zero and the others receiving the relevant differences. |
| Individual stroke play | Three players compare net total scores; WHS Appendix C recommends 95% for a medium-sized individual net event, with the committee setting the allowance. |
| Individual Stableford | Three players score points against a fixed target, usually par, using the individual Stableford handicap recommendation of 95% for a medium-sized event. |
| Three-player scramble | All three contribute to a team score, with the WHS recommended allowance of 30% of the low, 20% of the middle and 10% of the high Course Handicap. |
| Individual Par/Bogey | Each player wins, halves or loses holes against the committee's fixed target, with a 95% individual Par/Bogey recommendation for a medium-sized event. |
Worked example
Illustrative three-ball match-play calculation: Alex has a Playing Handicap of 8, Ben 14 and Chris 20. Alex is the lowest, so Alex plays off 0, Ben receives 6 strokes (14 minus 8), and Chris receives 12 strokes (20 minus 8); the strokes are allocated by the hole stroke index. This is a worked example only, not historical player data.

Common questions
What is the fairest handicap game for three golfers?
Three-ball match play is the most natural fit when all three want a direct contest. Under Rule 21.4, each player plays an individual match against the other two at the same time; use the agreed Terms of the Competition and the WHS match-play method rather than inventing a team allowance.
What handicap allowance should three players use in a scramble?
WHS Appendix C recommends 30% of the low Course Handicap, 20% of the middle Course Handicap and 10% of the high Course Handicap for a three-player scramble. The allowance is applied to the unrounded Course Handicap as the final step, and the committee should state the allowance and rounding in the Terms of the Competition.
Can three golfers play Stableford with handicaps?
Yes. Stableford is an individual form of stroke play under Rule 21.1, with points awarded by comparing each hole's score with a fixed target, usually par. WHS Appendix C lists 95% for individual Stableford in the recommended medium-sized-field case, subject to the committee's competition terms and any permitted adjustment for field size.
Should all three players get their full handicap in match play?
Not as relative match-play strokes. With the recommended 100% individual match-play allowance, the lowest Playing Handicap is set to zero and each other player receives the difference from that lowest Playing Handicap. This is different from receiving a full Playing Handicap against the course in stroke play.
Is a three-player skins game an official handicapped format?
Not automatically. Skins is a casual side-game arrangement rather than a named WHS Appendix C format, so the group should agree whether it uses net scores, a handicap difference or no handicap, and how ties carry over. Label the result as a house rule rather than a governing-body allowance.
Can a small three-player stroke-play group use 95%?
The WHS recommendation is 95% for individual stroke-play net events in a medium-sized field. R&A Appendix C notes that a committee could consider 100% for fewer than 30 players, so a three-player casual or competition round should follow the committee's stated terms rather than silently choosing a percentage.
