Best first choice
Four-ball match play. It uses all four players in a clear 2-v-2 contest while letting each golfer play their own ball, so a partner's good hole can cover an error. It also has an established Rules of Golf framework in Rule 23 and a recommended 90% handicap allowance for four-ball match play under WHS Appendix C, subject to the Committee's Terms of Competition.
What to agree before play
Do not call a casual scramble a universally standard Rules of Golf format; write the selection, tee-shot and handicap conditions down first. Four-ball and foursomes are not interchangeable: four-ball gives each player a separate ball, while foursomes requires partners to alternate strokes on one ball. In a match, agree whether the game is gross or net and how handicaps are applied before teeing off; do not invent an allowance for a house game.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Four-ball match play | Two teams of two each play their own ball, so four golfers get a direct team contest with a score on every hole from the better partner. |
| Foursomes match play | Two teams of two share one ball and alternate strokes, creating a genuinely different partnership challenge without requiring four separate matches. |
| Individual Stableford | All four players compete in one field for points against a fixed target on each hole, so nobody needs a permanent partner. |
| Par/Bogey | Each player plays an individual hole-by-hole comparison against the Committee's fixed target, which suits four players who want a match-play feel without pairing up. |
| Four-ball stroke play | Keep the two pairs but total the best score from each side over the round, giving four players a team result without hole-by-hole concessions. |
| Four-player scramble | A practical team arrangement in which all four contribute to a selected-ball score; agree the selection, tee-shot and handicap rules before starting because the Rules of Golf treat scrambles as an adapted form rather than a single fully prescribed format. |
Worked example
Illustrative four-ball match-play hole: Alex and Ben play against Chris and Dana. Alex scores 5 and Ben 4, while Chris scores 5 and Dana 6, so the sides record 4 and 5 respectively and Alex-Ben win the hole by one; the match is then 1 up to that side.

Common questions
What is the best golf game for four players?
Four-ball match play is the strongest default for four players because it creates a simple 2-v-2 contest and each golfer plays their own ball. If the group wants one shared ball per team, choose foursomes instead; if everyone wants an individual result, choose Stableford.
Can four players play four-ball match play?
Yes. Make two sides of two; each player plays a separate ball and the side's score for a hole is the lower score of the partners. Rule 23 covers four-ball in both match play and stroke play.
What handicap allowance applies to four-ball match play?
WHS Appendix C recommends 90% for four-ball match play. The allowance is applied to the unrounded Course Handicap when calculating Playing Handicap, and the Committee or competition Terms should confirm the exact procedure.
How does foursomes differ from four-ball for four players?
In foursomes, each pair plays one ball and alternates strokes, including alternating who tees off on each hole. In four-ball, both partners play their own balls and the lower score is the side's score for the hole.
Is a four-player scramble an official format with one universal handicap rule?
No universal casual rule set should be assumed. The Rules of Golf say scrambles can be adapted, so the group should publish its own selection and handicap conditions; WHS Appendix C lists a recommended four-player scramble allowance, but a Committee may set Terms for the competition.
Can four players play Stableford together?
Yes. Stableford is an individual form of stroke play in which each player's hole score is converted into points against a fixed target set by the Committee. Four players can share a group while each keeps an individual points total.
