Three-ball match play. Rule 21.4 expressly covers three players playing two simultaneous individual matches, avoiding a forced 2-v-1 team. It uses ordinary hole-by-hole match-play scoring while keeping all three players on the course together.
What to agree before play
Do not describe a rotating 2-v-1 game as an official three-player Rules format; it is an agreed arrangement and needs written team, stroke and tie-break terms. Do not assume one handicap allowance fits every house variant; WHS Appendix C recommends 100% for individual match play, while the Committee sets the allowance in the Terms of the Competition. A three-player round robin creates two matches per player, so keep separate scores and state whether the winner is decided by match points, holes-up or a pre-agreed tie-break.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Three-ball match play | Rule 21.4 specifically covers three players playing individual matches against each other at the same time. |
| Three-player round robin | Arrange Alex versus Ben, Ben versus Chris and Alex versus Chris; this is a practical tournament arrangement, not a separate Rules-defined golf format. |
| Rotating 2-v-1 match play | Put two players against one and rotate the solo player in equal blocks; agree team handicaps and scoring first because this is a house arrangement. |
| Three-hole head-to-head rotation | Run short, pre-agreed matches between each pair and total match points; the length and tie-break must be agreed locally. |
Worked example
Alex has a Playing Handicap of 8, Ben 14 and Chris 20. Using the recommended 100% individual match-play allowance, Alex plays off zero against Ben and Chris, Ben receives 6 strokes against Alex and Chris receives 12 against Alex; in Ben versus Chris, Ben is off zero and Chris receives 6. On stroke-index 4, if Alex makes 4 and Chris makes 5, Chris's stroke makes the net scores 4 and 4, so that hole is halved in their match.

Common questions
What is the official match-play format for three golfers?
Three-ball match play is the Rules-defined option. Rule 21.4 says each player plays an individual match against the other two at the same time, using one ball in both matches unless a ruling requires separate balls.
Can three golfers play a round robin?
Yes, as an agreed tournament arrangement: schedule each pair once, then decide in advance whether the overall result uses one point per win, holes-up or another tie-break. A round robin is not a separate three-player Rule of Golf format.
How are handicaps applied in three-ball match play?
For individual match play, WHS Appendix C recommends 100% of the unrounded Course Handicap as the final step in calculating Playing Handicap. The lowest Playing Handicap is normally zero and each opponent receives the difference, but the Committee should state the method for a three-player competition.
Is 2-v-1 match play an official three-player format?
Not as a named three-player format in the cited Rules. It can work as a house arrangement if the group agrees rotation, solo-player strokes, side scoring and tie-breaks.
Can three players play one 18-hole round and keep separate matches?
Yes. Three-ball match play is designed for that situation: each player is simultaneously in two individual matches. Record each opponent's result separately rather than treating the lowest total as the match winner.
Does the lowest handicapper always win a three-ball match?
No. Handicap strokes are intended to provide equity, not guarantee an outcome. Each hole is won, lost or tied against the relevant opponent.
