Best first choice
Rotating singles match play is the best starting point because five players can share a planned set of head-to-head matches without inventing a five-person Rules of Golf format. It also makes handicaps easier to explain: in each individual match, use the agreed allowance and set the lowest Playing Handicap to zero relative to the opponent.
What to agree before play
Calling five players one match: standard match play is between an individual or side and an opponent, so define pairings and the scoring schedule. Unequal teams without written terms: a 3-v-2 arrangement needs agreed points, substitutions, handicap treatment and tie procedure before play. Assuming every five-player variant has a WHS allowance: Appendix C lists specific formats, so do not transplant four-ball or team percentages to a house variant automatically.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Rotating singles match play | Schedule short or full-hole head-to-head matches so each player gets opponents without pretending five players form one standard match. |
| Round-robin singles match play | Plan the five players across separate matches or blocks so every pair meets once, creating 10 pairings over the programme. |
| Three-versus-two team match play | Use two unequal sides only when the Committee agrees the match structure, scoring and any balancing method in the Terms of the Competition. |
| Four-ball match play with a rotating fifth | Run a normal two-versus-two match and rotate the fifth person into a pre-agreed later match or hole block, treating the rotation as a house arrangement. |
| Match-play ladder or challenge rotation | Play one head-to-head match at a time while the fifth player waits or joins the next scheduled pairing, which keeps the rules clear but is less simultaneous. |
Worked example
Illustrative singles example: Alex has a Playing Handicap of 12 and Ben has 18. With the agreed 100% individual match-play allowance, Alex plays off zero and Ben receives 6 strokes, on the six lowest stroke-index holes; if Alex is 3 up after 16 holes, the match is won because only 2 holes remain.

Common questions
Can five golfers play one standard match-play match together?
Not as one ordinary five-player head-to-head match. Match play is organised around an individual or side against an opponent or opposing side, so five golfers should use scheduled pairings, teams or a clearly written house competition.
What is the simplest match-play format for five players?
Use rotating singles: decide which pairings play, how many holes each match covers, and how wins are ranked. A full round-robin has 10 unique pairings, so it normally needs multiple rounds or separate tee times rather than one group playing all matches at once.
How should handicaps work in five-player match play?
For each individual match, apply the agreed individual match-play allowance to the unrounded Course Handicap, then make the lowest Playing Handicap zero and give the difference to the other player. A club or Committee should set the terms for any team or rotating variant.
Can I make a 3-v-2 match-play game fair?
You can propose a 3-v-2 house competition, but fairness is not automatic. Agree in advance how many players or match results count, how strokes are applied, whether players rotate and how ties are settled; do not describe the arrangement as a standard WHS format without support.
Is four-ball match play a good fit for five players?
Only with a rotation. Four-ball match play is normally two players as a side against two other players, so the fifth player must be scheduled into another match or a later block under terms everyone accepts.
Are these five-player recommendations official formats?
No. Individual match play and four-ball match play are Rules-based forms, but the five-player rotations and unequal-team suggestions here are editorial arrangements. The Committee or club must publish the competition terms before play.
