Regional conventions and their limits
In the UK, match play is governed by the Rules of Golf adopted by The R&A. Rule 3.2 treats a match as a hole-by-hole contest: the player or side wins a hole with the lower score, or a hole may be conceded, and the match ends when the lead is greater than the holes remaining. Players should declare handicaps before the match; handicap strokes are given by hole and the lower net score wins that hole. For a handicap match, the committee’s Terms of Competition should state the allowance. The R&A’s Appendix C recommends 100% for singles match play and says the lowest Playing Handicap plays from zero, with the opponent receiving the difference. It also gives 90% for four-ball match play. England Golf describes Playing Handicap as a competition-only calculation based on Course Handicap multiplied by the mandatory allowance. These are governing recommendations and competition requirements, not a universal club-day betting rule: a UK club or event may publish its own permitted terms, so players should check them before starting.

Worked example
Illustrative example, not historical player data: if a committee applies the recommended 100% singles match-play allowance and Alex's resulting Playing Handicap is 8 while Ben's is 14, Alex plays from zero and Ben receives 6 strokes, allocated by stroke index under the competition terms.

Common questions
Is match play called something different in the UK?
The authoritative R&A material reviewed calls it match play. No separate UK name is evidenced here; a club may use its own informal wording, but that is not a national rule.
What handicap allowance is recommended for singles match play in the UK?
The R&A Appendix C recommends 100% for singles match play. Apply the allowance to the unrounded Course Handicap when calculating Playing Handicap, then normally set the lowest Playing Handicap to zero and give the difference to the other player. Check the event Terms of Competition.
What happens when a match is all square after the final scheduled hole?
Under Rule 3.2, the match is extended one hole at a time until there is a winner unless the competition terms provide a permitted alternative. The terms should also specify how handicap strokes are applied on extra holes.
