When each fits
Choose modified Stableford when you want an individual points game with amplified rewards for excellent holes and penalties for poor ones, using a published event table. Choose Ryder Cup format when you want two teams contesting scheduled four-ball, foursomes and singles matches for a shared points result.
modified Stableford in brief

Ryder Cup format in brief
A team match-play event combining four-ball, foursomes and singles matches.
Table
| Comparison | modified Stableford | Ryder Cup format |
|---|---|---|
| One line | A points contest that rewards strong holes and penalises poor ones more sharply than ordinary Stableford. | A team match-play event combining four-ball, foursomes and singles matches. |
| Players | Minimum 2 for an individual field; ideal for 3+ players in a field. It can also be run head-to-head, but it is not intrinsically a match-play format. | Minimum: 2 for one head-to-head singles match; 4 for one two-versus-two team match. Ideal: 8 or more players split into two teams for a Ryder Cup-style event. |
| Scoring unit | Points awarded on each hole, then totalled for the round; the highest total wins. | holes within each match, then points for the team total |
| Handicap method | There is no single universal WHS allowance specifically named for modified Stableford. The Committee should state the allowance in the Terms of Competition. If the event is administered as an individual Stableford handicap competition, WHS Appendix C recommends 95% of each player's unrounded Course Handicap as the Playing Handicap; confirm that treatment with the relevant national association because modified Stableford is an adapted form with committee-set scoring. Apply strokes by the published stroke index and do not present 95% as automatic for every modified Stableford event. | The Ryder Cup itself is a scratch team competition, so it has no inherent handicap allowance. For a handicap recreation, use the applicable format rather than one Ryder Cup percentage: individual match play 100% of the unrounded Course Handicap, four-ball match play 90%, and foursomes 50% of the combined team handicap. In match play, the lowest Playing Handicap normally plays from zero and the others receive the difference; the Terms of the Competition can specify another approach. |
| Money settles how | Only if players agree stakes: settle after the round on the final points totals, or use a separately agreed per-point amount. The format itself creates no required betting or payout method. | There is no built-in money settlement. If players agree stakes, settle by the agreed match or team point result; a common house rule is one equal unit per match, with a half-unit for a halved match. Agree whether the overall team result adds a bonus before play. |
| Pace | Often faster than ordinary stroke play when the Terms of Competition allow a player to stop once no points can be scored on a hole; otherwise pace is broadly similar. This is a practical tendency, not a measured rule or guarantee. | Same to faster than stroke play for an individual match, because a hole or match can be conceded; a full team event is slower overall because it runs many matches across sessions. |
| Best for | Groups wanting an individual points game with a clear risk-and-reward emphasis, especially a competition that wants birdies and eagles to matter more than in ordinary Stableford. | Groups wanting a team day with changing partnerships, a mix of alternate shot and better-ball play, and a clear points-based finish. |
| Weakness | The points table is not universal, so players can dispute results unless the Committee publishes the target score, points for each result, handicap treatment, tie-break and pick-up procedure beforehand. | It needs careful scheduling and agreed team-selection, session, handicap and tie-break rules; a small casual group cannot reproduce the full event without practical adaptations. |
Worked example
Illustrative inputs and selected terms, not historical results. Under an explicitly selected modified points table of par 0, bogey −1 and birdie +2, Alex's 4, 5 and 3 on par-4 holes total 1 point; Ben's 5, 4 and 4 total -1. The Committee must specify the actual table. In an illustrative miniature team event, Alex and Ben win a four-ball for 1 point; Alex wins a singles match and Ben loses another. With 1 point per win, their side takes 2 points and Chris/Dana's side 1. This is not an official event record.
