When each fits
Choose round robin when a small field wants every player or side to meet several opponents in separate match-play fixtures and can accommodate the extra scheduling. Choose shamble when teams want a selected-drive start but each golfer to play an individual ball thereafter, with the Committee's conditions stated.
round robin in brief
A schedule where each player or side meets the others in separate head-to-head matches.
shamble in brief
Teams select the best tee shot, then play individual balls and count the lowest score.
Table
| Comparison | round robin | shamble |
|---|---|---|
| One line | A schedule where each player or side meets the others in separate head-to-head matches. | Teams select the best tee shot, then play individual balls and count the lowest score. |
| Players | Minimum 3 competitors or sides for a meaningful schedule; ideal 4-8, with each participant playing the others in turn. This is an individual field or a field of sides, not one group playing every hole together. | Minimum: 2 players forming one team; ideal: 4 players for one team, or 8+ players for head-to-head teams or a field. |
| Scoring unit | Each match is scored hole by hole as match play; the overall table uses agreed match points, wins, halves or another competition countback. | Strokes: after the selected drive, each player completes the hole with their own ball; the lowest team score is the hole's team score. |
| Handicap method | For individual handicap match play, use the competition's stated allowance; WHS Appendix C recommends 100% of the unrounded Course Handicap for individual match play. After Playing Handicaps are calculated, the lowest plays off zero and each opponent receives the difference. A round robin involving teams or another form must not automatically inherit this allowance: the Committee should state the allowance and stroke-index method in the Terms of Competition. | Use the Competition Committee's Terms of Competition. The USGA shamble guidance suggests 75% of each player's Course Handicap for a two-person team and 65% of each player's Course Handicap for a four-person team; apply the percentage to the unrounded Course Handicap, then calculate Playing Handicap. These are shamble guidance figures, not a universal WHS allowance, and other team sizes or formats need a stated house method. |
| Money settles how | Only if stakes are agreed: settle after the round-robin table, using the announced value for each match point, win or final placing. The Rules of Golf do not set a round-robin payout or betting convention. | Shamble has no inherent money settlement. If stakes are agreed, settle on the final team totals or on separately agreed per-hole or match bets; write the payment and tie rules before play. |
| Pace | Slower overall than one stroke-play round for the same field is the usual tendency, because a round robin requires multiple head-to-head matches and scheduling; this is an editorial planning judgement, not a measured statistic. | Usually slower than ordinary stroke play for one group because everyone tees off and then plays an individual ball, although it can be quicker than a scramble after the drive because players do not repeatedly choose and replay one team ball. |
| Best for | Club leagues, social groups and small competitions that want everyone to meet several opponents rather than be eliminated after one loss. | Groups that want the teamwork of a selected-drive game while keeping every player's approach shots and putting in play; it suits a four-person team event or a small head-to-head competition with clear Committee conditions. |
| Weakness | It needs more match slots than a knockout and can create tie-break disputes or uneven schedules when players withdraw, so the Committee must publish the draw, points and tie procedure. | The format is not fully standardised: drive-selection limits, team size, scoring, handicap treatment and tie procedures can vary, so an event without written conditions can produce disputes. |
Worked example
Illustrative inputs and selected terms, not historical results. Four entrants Alex, Ben, Chris and Dana in an all-play-all schedule need 6 pairings. That schedule is different from the rotating six-hole partner game sometimes given the same name. Alex and Ben select a preferred drive then play separate balls, scoring 4 and 5. If the event counts one best score, their side records 4; another counting rule would require a different result.
