Best first choice

Three-player scramble. It is the most straightforward arrangement because the R&A expressly describes scramble teams of two, three or four and explains the repeated select-and-play sequence. For handicapped play, the USGA’s recommended three-player allowance is 30% of the lowest Course Handicap, 20% of the middle and 10% of the highest, subject to the Committee’s Terms of Competition.

What to agree before play

Ambrose is not one universal ruleset: the competition sheet must settle tee-shot minimums, placement restrictions and scoring. Do not apply a four-player scramble allowance to three players; the USGA table gives a separate 30%/20%/10% recommendation for three-player teams. A Texas scramble is normally described as a four-person variant, so a three-player version needs explicit competition approval rather than being presented as a universal rule.

Table

Game or arrangementWhy it fits
Three-player scramble all three players tee off, select one shot, and continue from the selected spot, which is the cleanest fit for exactly three players.
Ambrose use the same shared-ball scramble pattern, with the event sheet defining its selection and handicap conditions; it suits a named competition format rather than an improvised scoring system.
Florida (Step Aside) scramble the player whose shot is selected sits out the next stroke, adding rotation and reducing repeated use of the strongest player’s ball.
Texas scramble for three treat this as a competition-approved three-player adaptation only; the R&A describes the usual Texas version as four-person and requiring minimum tee-shot counts, so confirm the event conditions first.

Worked example

Illustrative only: Alex has Course Handicap 8, Ben 16 and Chris 24. Applying the recommended three-player scramble allowance gives 30% x 8 = 2.4, 20% x 16 = 3.2 and 10% x 24 = 2.4, for a team handicap of 8.0; if the team returns 72 gross, its illustrative net score is 64. The Committee should calculate from unrounded Course Handicaps and state its adopted method.

Common questions

What is the best scramble format for three golfers?

A basic three-player scramble is the clearest choice: everyone plays from the teeing area, the team selects one result, and all three play the next stroke from that spot. Put any extra conditions on the competition sheet.

What handicap allowance is recommended for a three-player scramble?

The USGA Appendix C recommendation is 30% of the lowest Course Handicap, 20% of the middle Course Handicap and 10% of the highest. It is applied to unrounded Course Handicaps, and the Committee should specify the allowance in the Terms of Competition.

Is Ambrose different from a scramble?

Ambrose is commonly used for a scramble-style team event, but the name does not by itself settle every condition. Treat the organiser’s written rules as controlling, especially for tee-shot minimums, placement limits and the handicap calculation.

Can three golfers play a Texas scramble?

They can use a three-player adaptation only if the competition approves it. The R&A describes Texas Scramble as a four-person team event with a usual minimum number of tee shots from each member, so do not assume that wording automatically covers three players.

How does a Florida scramble work with three players?

After a team selects a player’s stroke, that player does not play the next stroke. The R&A lists Florida, Dropout, Step Aside, Stand Aside and Stand Out as names for this variation; agree the exact procedure before starting.

Can three players use the regular Rules of Golf in a scramble?

Scramble is an alternative form of play with modifications, not a single complete format in the core Rules. The R&A says the Committee decides situations not covered by the Rules or the additional format modifications, so publish the local conditions before play.
