Best first choice
Two-team scramble (4+3). It is the cleanest fit because the R&A describes a scramble as a two-, three- or four-person team format, not a single seven-person team. It also lets the committee apply the WHS recommended four-player and three-player scramble allowance categories separately, instead of inventing a seven-player allowance.
What to agree before play
Do not run one seven-person team and call its handicap allowance official: the cited R&A and WHS material covers two, three and four-person scrambles, not seven. Do not assume Ambrose has one universal handicap formula: an Australian event or club may set its own terms, and a Golf NSW two-person event used one-quarter of combined daily handicap while a club example used different fractions for teams of two, three and four. A 4+3 split is unequal, so agree whether the teams are ranked by nett score, gross score, or a deliberately adjusted competition condition; do not silently compare unlike handicap treatments.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Two-team scramble (4+3) | Split seven golfers into one four-person team and one three-person team, so both teams use recognised scramble sizes and can be compared on gross or nett score. |
| Two-team Ambrose (4+3) | Use Ambrose as the event's local name for a scramble-style competition, with written house rules and separate four- and three-player teams. |
| Three-team scramble (2+2+3) | Make three small teams for a field event, using the relevant two-, two- and three-player arrangements rather than pretending seven golfers form one standard team. |
| Rotating scramble teams (editorial arrangement) | Rotate golfers between four- and three-player teams across separate rounds or nines, but publish the rotation and scoring method before play because this is an arrangement, not a recognised seven-player format. |
Worked example
Illustrative 18-hole example: Team Alex, Ben, Chris and Dana has unrounded Course Handicaps 8, 12, 18 and 24; applying the WHS recommended scramble percentages gives 25% x 8 + 20% x 12 + 15% x 18 + 10% x 24 = 9.5, which rounds to a 10 Playing Handicap. Team Ben, Chris and Alex's three-player opponents have Course Handicaps 10, 16 and 22; 30% x 10 + 20% x 16 + 10% x 22 = 8.4, which rounds to 8. If the four-player team shoots 86 gross and the three-player team shoots 92 gross, their illustrative nett scores are 76 and 84 respectively; the committee must state whether that comparison is the competition's settlement method.

Common questions
Can seven golfers play one scramble team?
They can agree a social house game, but it should not be presented as a standard or WHS-recommended seven-player scramble. Split the group into teams of four and three, or into smaller teams, and state the local rules.
Is Ambrose the same as a scramble?
Ambrose is commonly used for a scramble-style team game in Australia, but the exact name, tee-shot minimums, placing limits and handicap calculation can be event-specific. Treat the event conditions as controlling rather than importing a formula from another club.
How should handicaps work for seven players?
For a 4+3 split, calculate each team under the applicable competition condition. The WHS Appendix C recommendation lists 25/20/15/10 percent for four-player scramble teams and 30/20/10 percent for three-player teams, applied to unrounded Course Handicaps; it does not list a seven-player allowance.
What is the simplest scoring setup for two teams of seven?
Record one gross team score on each hole, add the agreed team Playing Handicap at the end, and rank the nett totals. Put the team sizes, ball-placement limits, minimum drives and tie-break method on the conditions sheet before tee-off.
Can the seven golfers play three teams instead?
Yes, as an event arrangement such as teams of two, two and three. Use the competition's stated handicap method for each team and avoid describing the three-team field as one official seven-player format.
Does the Rules of Golf prescribe all Ambrose details?
No. The R&A places scramble variants under Other Forms of Play and says matters not covered by the Rules or additional format modifications should be decided by the Committee fairly and consistently. Publish the missing details as competition conditions.
