Best first choice

Three 3-player scrambles. It divides nine golfers evenly into three teams and matches the WHS Appendix C recommendation for a 3-player scramble: 30% of the lowest Course Handicap, 20% of the middle and 10% of the highest. It also avoids inventing a 5-player allowance or sending all nine golfers around the course as one slow group.

What to agree before play

Do not send all nine players as one group; use separate tee times or three groups and follow the club's pace policy. Do not apply the 4-player 25/20/15/10% allowance to a 3-player team, or apply it to a 5-player team without a competition-approved method. Ambrose and Texas scramble conditions vary by event, so publish selection, placement, tee-shot minimums and handicap terms before play rather than presenting a local house rule as a universal rule.

Table

Game or arrangementWhy it fits
Three 3-player scrambles Split nine golfers into three equal teams, keeping the scoring and pace manageable while using the WHS 3-player scramble recommendation.
Three 3-player Ambrose teams Use the Australian label for a scramble-style event, with each team selecting its preferred shot and publishing the event conditions before play.
Three-team Texas scramble arrangement Run three teams of three under a Texas-scramble rule sheet, but treat drive minimums and other conditions as organiser rules rather than universal rules.
Four-player scramble plus five-player scramble This is a practical 4+5 split when the organiser accepts unequal teams, but it needs written competition adjustments because the WHS table has no 5-player scramble allowance.
Rotating 3-player scramble Keep three teams of three for each round and rotate team membership between rounds, useful for a multi-round social day without pretending nine people form one playing group.

Worked example

For one 3-player scramble team, Alex has Course Handicap 6, Ben 14 and Chris 22. Applying the WHS recommendation to the unrounded Course Handicaps gives 30% x 6 = 1.8, 20% x 14 = 2.8 and 10% x 22 = 2.2, for a team handicap of 6.8. If the Committee's Terms of Competition round that to 7, a gross team score of 72 becomes 65 net; the other two teams use the same published method.

Common questions

Can all nine golfers play one scramble group?

They can agree to a social arrangement, but it is a poor competition and pace choice. Split nine golfers into three teams of three, with separate tee times or groups, and check the club's pace requirements.

What handicap allowance suits three-player scramble teams?

WHS Appendix C recommends 30% of the lowest Course Handicap, 20% of the middle and 10% of the highest, applied to unrounded Course Handicaps. A Committee sets the allowance in the Terms of Competition and may adjust it for field size or make-up.

Is Ambrose a separate official Rules of Golf format?

Ambrose is a commonly used event name for a scramble-style team game, especially in Australia, but its detailed conditions are set by the event. Confirm the competition sheet instead of assuming one national set of Ambrose rules.

Can nine players be split into a four-player and a five-player scramble?

Yes, as an organiser's practical arrangement, but it is not covered by the WHS Appendix C scramble table. The Committee must state the handicap method and any balancing adjustment; do not label an invented percentage as an official allowance.

What should a nine-player Texas scramble specify?

Specify the number of drives each player must contribute, how the selected ball is marked and placed, who plays next, and the team handicap method. Those conditions are event rules and can differ between clubs.

Can we rotate teams between rounds?

Yes. Keep each round as three teams of three, record the team list and handicap calculation for that round, and rotate players only between rounds so the competition remains clear.
