When each fits
Choose Stableford par when you want individual points, after confirming the label means ordinary Stableford against par—not Par/Bogey—and publishing the scoring terms. Choose Texas scramble when four-person teamwork and one shared team score fit, with tee-shot minimums, handicap allowance and placement rules set beforehand.
Stableford par in brief
An ambiguous label usually intended to mean Stableford scored against par, not a separate official format.
Texas scramble in brief
A four-person scramble where each player contributes a set number of tee shots.
Table
| Comparison | Stableford par | Texas scramble |
|---|---|---|
| One line | An ambiguous label usually intended to mean Stableford scored against par, not a separate official format. | A four-person scramble where each player contributes a set number of tee shots. |
| Players | Minimum 1; ideal as an individual field of 2 or more. It can also be played by a side, but ‘Stableford par’ needs the Committee or group to define the format before play. | Minimum: 4 for the standard Texas scramble; ideal: a four-player team, with multiple teams in the field. It is a team stroke-play arrangement rather than an individual or inherently head-to-head format. |
| Scoring unit | Stableford points per hole, normally awarded by comparing the player’s net or gross score with a fixed target, usually par. If the intended game is Par/Bogey, the unit is holes won, lost or halved instead. | Team strokes per hole and total strokes for the round, normally ranked as gross or net scores under the competition terms. |
| Handicap method | For an individual Stableford competition, the WHS Appendix C recommended allowance is 95% applied to the unrounded Course Handicap as the final step in calculating Playing Handicap. For individual Par/Bogey it is also 95%. There is no separate evidenced WHS allowance called ‘Stableford par’; a hybrid or house game requires the Committee’s stated terms. | For a four-player scramble, WHS Appendix C recommends 25% of the lowest Course Handicap, 20% of the second, 15% of the third and 10% of the highest, applied to unrounded Course Handicaps as the final step in calculating Playing Handicap. Texas-specific terms may set a different allowance, and the committee should publish it; do not substitute Handicap Indexes directly. |
| Money settles how | No inherent money settlement. If players agree a stake, settle it using the pre-agreed basis, such as total points or a per-point amount; write that house rule down before starting. | There is no built-in stake. If players agree to money, settle it at the end of the round from the final team result or from a separately stated side game; record the amount and tie-break terms before play. |
| Pace | Often faster than ordinary stroke play when played as Stableford, because a player may stop a hole once the result will be zero points; this is a rules-based pace feature, not a measured time claim. | Usually slower than ordinary individual stroke play for the same number of golfers because every team member hits each shot and the team must select and mark the chosen ball, although the shared continuation ball can reduce walking and searching. |
| Best for | Groups wanting a forgiving points-based individual competition and a clear handicap framework, provided they state whether ‘par’ means Stableford’s usual target of par or the separate Par/Bogey form. | Club charity days, social team competitions and groups wanting repeated chances to contribute a drive, approach or putt while still producing one team score. |
| Weakness | The name is not sufficiently precise: Stableford and Par/Bogey use different scoring systems, so players can disagree about points, hole results, handicaps or settlement unless the terms are written first. | The name does not fix the operational rules: drive minimums, tee and ball-placement limits, handicap allowance, and tie-break method vary by Terms of the Competition, so an unclear brief can create disputes. |
Worked example
Illustrative inputs and selected terms, not historical results. On a par-4 hole, a score of 4 earns 2 points in ordinary Stableford or a tied-hole result in Par/Bogey. Confirm which meaning the label intends. In this explicitly selected Texas scramble event, Alex's side selects a shot at each stage and records 4; Ben's side records 5. The team sizes, selected-shot procedures and gross or net contest are event terms.
