What is Active Season in golf? Active Season is the period when acceptable scores from a specified area should be submitted for handicap purposes. If the authorised association declares 1 April to 31 October as the Active Season, Alex and Ben's otherwise acceptable match-play round on 12 July falls within the season; a similar round on 15 December does not automatically qualify for handicap purposes.

Meaning

Active Season is the period when acceptable scores from a specified area should be submitted for handicap purposes. The Authorized Association responsible for that area determines the period. It may run all year or only during stated calendar dates, so it is not automatically the same everywhere.

How it matters in match play

A match-play round can contribute to a Handicap Index only when it is an authorized format in the relevant jurisdiction and is played during that area's Active Season, subject to the other conditions for an acceptable score. A match being played for a result does not by itself make its score acceptable for handicapping. Check the local association's schedule and format requirements.

Common questions

Who decides when the Active Season applies?

The Authorized Association responsible for the area where the round is played determines the Active Season. A club follows the applicable jurisdictional schedule rather than choosing a private season for handicap purposes.

Is the Active Season the same in every region?

No. Some jurisdictions have a year-round Active Season, while others publish seasonal dates. The applicable dates can therefore differ by area, so use the schedule issued by the relevant Authorized Association.

Does playing match play during the Active Season guarantee a score can be posted?

No. Active Season is only one condition. The round must also satisfy the Rules of Handicapping, including the requirements for an authorised format, minimum holes, a suitable course and compliance with the Rules of Golf.

What is the difference between Active Season and Inactive Season?

Active Season is the period when acceptable scores from the specified area should be submitted for handicap purposes. Inactive Season is the period when scores in that area cannot be submitted for that purpose.

Can a score played outside my home jurisdiction still be affected by Active Season?

Yes. The Rules of Handicapping assess the jurisdiction where the round was played as well as the player's home jurisdiction and the format authorisations. Check the applicable requirements for both situations before posting.

Does Active Season change a player's Handicap Index directly?

No. It controls when scores may be submitted for handicap purposes. Eligible scores then contribute to the Handicap Index calculation under the other Rules of Handicapping.
