Meaning
A Back-Nine Bet is a casual wager decided by the players' results on holes 10 to 18. The group agrees whether the bet uses gross or net scores, match-play holes or a nine-hole total, the stake, and how ties are settled before play.
How it matters in match play
In a head-to-head version, Alex and Ben compare each hole on 10 to 18 and the agreed stake goes to the player who wins more holes, or they can compare the nine-hole gross or net totals instead. The Rules of Golf distinguish match play from stroke play, so the group should name the scoring method rather than assume that every Back-Nine Bet is match play.

Worked example
Alex and Ben agree on a $5 gross-total Back-Nine Bet. Alex scores 42 and Ben 44 on holes 10 to 18, so Alex wins the $5; if their totals are tied, the agreed tie-break or a $0 settlement applies.

Common questions
Is a Back-Nine Bet the same as a Nassau?
Not necessarily. A Nassau normally contains separate front-nine, back-nine and overall bets. A Back-Nine Bet can stand alone and covers only holes 10 to 18, with its own agreed scoring and stake.
Do handicap strokes apply to a Back-Nine Bet?
Only if the players agree to a net version. For an organised individual match-play competition, WHS Appendix C recommends a 100% allowance, with the lowest Playing Handicap set to zero relative to the others; a casual back-nine wager should not silently borrow that method without agreement.
Can a Back-Nine Bet use match play instead of total strokes?
Yes, if that is agreed before the round. Players can compare who wins each hole from 10 to 18, or compare the nine-hole total. Write down whether the bet is gross or net and how a tied result is settled.
What happens if the back nine is tied?
Use the pre-agreed house rule. Common options are no payout, carry the stake into another agreed contest, or use a countback based on the last six, three and final hole. None is automatic for this casual bet.
Does a Back-Nine Bet change how the holes are played?
No. It is a side wager layered onto the round. Players should still play and record the holes under the applicable Rules of Golf, while the bet uses only the agreed results from holes 10 to 18.
Can four players play a Back-Nine Bet?
Yes, but settle the structure first. The group might use individual scores, two sides in match play, or a best-score arrangement. The players must agree how ties, handicaps and the $ stake work before teeing off.
