Meaning
In the World Handicap System, a Bogey Player is a golfer with a Handicap Index of approximately 20.0 for men or 24.0 for women. The term is a reference profile used in course rating, not a promise that every golfer at that index scores bogey on every hole.
How it matters in match play
Bogey Player is not a match-play format or a special match rule. It can describe one competitor's general playing profile, while each match still uses the players' applicable Course Handicap and Playing Handicap under the competition's authorised terms. Do not assign match strokes simply because someone is called a Bogey Player; calculate them from the relevant handicaps and format.

Worked example
Illustrative example: Alex has a Handicap Index of 20.0 and Ben has 8.0, so Alex may fit the WHS Bogey Player reference profile, but their match strokes must still be calculated from the rated tees and the competition's handicap method rather than assumed from the label.

Common questions
Is a Bogey Player the same as an 18-handicap golfer?
No. The current WHS reference is approximately Handicap Index 20.0 for men and 24.0 for women. A player's Course Handicap can differ because it depends on the tees' Course Rating and Slope Rating.
Does Bogey Player mean the golfer makes a bogey on every hole?
No. It is a reference player profile used in the handicap and course-rating system. It describes an approximate ability level, not a hole-by-hole scoring pattern.
Does a Bogey Player automatically receive a fixed number of strokes in match play?
No. Match-play strokes depend on the players' calculated Playing Handicaps, the authorised format, and the competition terms. The Bogey Player label alone does not set an allowance.
What is a Bogey Rating?
Bogey Rating is the expected score for a Bogey Player on a course under normal conditions. The difference between Course Rating and Bogey Rating helps determine Slope Rating.
Is Bogey Player a handicap competition format?
No. It is a WHS reference definition used when evaluating playing difficulty. A handicap competition still needs its own authorised format and applicable handicap method.
Are the Bogey Player yardages universal playing requirements?
No. The reference yardages in the USGA definition describe the rating profile. They are not a requirement that an individual golfer must meet, and regional course-rating procedures should be followed in the relevant jurisdiction.
