Meaning
A bye lets a player or team advance in a knockout draw without facing an opponent that round. It accommodates entry counts that do not fill a complete bracket. It is a draw arrangement, not a golf scoring result.
How it matters in match play
In Match Play, a bye means no match is scheduled for that draw position in the relevant round. The player advances, but the bye is not a Won Hole, Match Win or Match Result, and it does not create a hole-by-hole score. The Committee should state the draw method and any seeding or bye allocation in the Terms of the Competition.

Worked example
In an eight-place Knockout draw with seven entrants, Alex receives the single bye shown in the Draw, so Alex plays no first-round match and enters the quarter-final; this illustrative example does not record a Match Win or a score for that unused first-round place.

Common questions
Does a bye count as a match win?
No. A bye advances a player or team without an opponent and without a played match. Record it as a draw outcome, not as a Match Win or a Match Result with a score.
How is a bye different from a walkover?
A bye is normally built into the draw because the field does not fill the bracket. A walkover usually concerns an opponent who does not play, such as after a withdrawal or failure to appear. The Terms of the Competition should determine the recorded outcome.
Who gets a bye in a golf match-play draw?
The Committee decides this under the published draw procedure. One USGA committee-procedure recommendation gives the bye to the number-one draw position, then the next positions if more are needed, while completing other flights before using byes in the last flight.
Does a player with a bye receive handicap strokes?
No strokes are applied because no hole is played. Handicap arrangements apply when the player actually contests a match, subject to the competition's stated method.
Is Bye a Rule of Golf term?
No specific Rule of Golf defines a bye. It is a competition-draw term. The Committee should state the draw and advancement arrangements in the Terms of the Competition rather than treating a bye as a Rules-based scoring result.
Can a bye happen in a round-robin competition?
A bye is most commonly discussed in a Knockout or Match-Play Bracket. A round-robin schedule can also leave an entrant without a fixture in a particular round, but the organiser should explain that schedule explicitly instead of assuming the same draw convention.
