What is Closest-to-the-Pin Bet in golf? A closest-to-the-pin bet is a pre-agreed side wager on which player leaves an eligible shot nearest the flagstick. Alex, Ben, Chris and Dana agree to a $5 closest-to-the-pin pot on the 7th hole, a par-three; Alex's tee shot finishes 2.4 metres from the hole, Ben's 4.1 metres, and the others are off the green, so Alex wins the $20 pot under those agreed conditions.

Meaning

A closest-to-the-pin bet is a pre-agreed side wager on which player leaves an eligible shot nearest the flagstick. It is most commonly run on a designated par-three, with only balls that come to rest on the putting green eligible unless the group agrees different conditions before play.

How it matters in match play

The bet is separate from the match result: a player can win the closest-to-the-pin pot while losing the hole or the match. Agree before teeing off which holes and shots count, whether the ball must finish on the green, how ties or carryovers are settled, and whether handicaps have any role. The usual proximity test is not a WHS handicap format.

Common questions

Does closest-to-the-pin normally apply only on par-threes?

Usually. Tournament and friendly versions commonly nominate a par-three and compare tee shots, but a group can agree to include other holes or approach shots. Put any broader eligibility and any minimum-distance rule in writing before the round.

Does the ball have to be on the green to win?

That is a common condition, but it is a house rule for this side bet rather than a universal betting rule. Agree it before play; otherwise a shot off the green can create a dispute even if it is physically nearer to the hole.

Do WHS handicap strokes change a closest-to-the-pin bet?

Not by default. The WHS allowance table covers specified competition formats, not this casual proximity wager. If your group wants a handicap-adjusted version, define the method and eligibility before play rather than borrowing an allowance without authority.

What happens if two shots are equally close?

Use the tie method agreed before the round, such as a split pot or a carryover. Do not assume a universal result; closest-to-the-pin side bets are settled by the group or event conditions.

Can I win the closest-to-the-pin pot and lose the hole?

Yes. The proximity pot is a separate side bet. It does not change the strokes played, the hole result, or the match result.

Is closest-to-the-pin a format under the Rules of Golf?

No special Rules of Golf format governs the casual bet. The Rules govern the underlying round, while the players or Committee set the side-bet conditions. Keep the wager separate from official scoring unless the Terms of the Competition say otherwise.
