What is Division in golf? A division is a separately defined section of a golf competition. The club places Alex (Handicap Index 8.4) and Ben (17.2) in different divisions; if Alex wins the scratch division and Ben wins the handicap division, those are separate illustrative results under the published terms, not a claim about a real event.

Meaning

A division is a separately defined section of a golf competition. A Committee may use criteria such as handicap, age or gender, then state who belongs in each division and how results and prizes are decided. A division is an event arrangement, not a separate form of play.

How it matters in match play

In match play, a division can organise the draw so players compete within an agreed category, such as a handicap division or an age division. The Committee should state the eligibility limits, draw or flight structure, handicap allowance and tie procedure in the Terms of the Competition. The division itself does not change how a hole is won, lost or halved.

Common questions

Is a division the same as a flight in golf?

They can describe a similar grouping of a field, especially when players are separated by handicap, but local usage varies. Check the event's Terms of the Competition rather than assuming that division and flight have identical eligibility or prize rules.

Can a match-play event have divisions?

Yes. A Committee may organise separate match-play draws or categories, provided the eligibility, draw, handicap arrangements and tie procedures are stated in advance. The division is an administrative category; the match is still settled hole by hole under its chosen format.

Who decides the boundaries of a golf division?

The Committee sets the boundaries in the Terms of the Competition. It may use Handicap Index, another stated handicap measure, age, gender or another eligibility condition, subject to the competition's governing requirements. There is no universal division range that applies to every club event.
