Meaning
An incomplete round stops before all scheduled holes are completed. Under the World Handicap System, it may still produce a handicap score when enough holes were played and the reason for stopping was valid; holes not played are handled using an expected score under the applicable rules.
How it matters in match play
In match play, a round can end early because the result is already decided, such as when a player is 4 up with 3 holes left. That finishes the match, but it is not automatically a complete 18-hole handicap round. For handicap purposes, the WHS minimum-hole and valid-reason tests still apply; match scoring records the result that was reached.

Worked example
Alex and Ben stop after 14 holes because severe weather makes play unsafe. Alex's 14-hole scores are submitted hole by hole; the WHS adds an expected Score Differential for the four holes not played to create an 18-hole Score Differential, if the round otherwise qualifies.

Common questions
Can an incomplete round count towards a Handicap Index?
It can. Under the WHS, an 18-hole score generally needs at least 10 holes, while a 9-hole score requires all 9 holes. The round must otherwise be acceptable and the reason for stopping must be valid.
What happens to holes not played in an incomplete round?
For an acceptable round, the WHS normally uses an expected Score Differential for the holes not played. In a 10- to 17-hole submission, the played holes are entered hole by hole so the played and expected portions can be combined.
Does a match finishing early make the round invalid?
Not automatically. A match finishing before the final hole is listed as a possible valid reason, but the minimum-hole and other acceptability requirements still apply before the result can be used for handicap purposes.
