Meaning
An Initial Handicap Index is the first Handicap Index allocated to a player under the World Handicap System after the player submits acceptable scores covering at least 54 holes. The calculation uses the applicable fewer-than-20 Score Differential table, so it is not simply an average of every score.
How it matters in match play
An Initial Handicap Index can be used to establish the player’s Course Handicap and Playing Handicap for a match, subject to the competition’s authorised format and handicap allowance. It is not a special match-play handicap: the match uses the player’s current Handicap Index, then applies the relevant WHS calculation and allowance. Confirm the committee’s terms before play.

Worked example
Alex submits three acceptable 18-hole scores producing Score Differentials of 18.4, 20.1 and 19.0. With three differentials, the lowest one is used and the 2.0 adjustment applies, so Alex’s illustrative Initial Handicap Index is 16.4 (18.4 − 2.0), rounded to one decimal.

Common questions
How many holes are needed for an Initial Handicap Index?
At least 54 holes of acceptable scores are required. They can be submitted as any mix of 9-hole and 18-hole rounds, provided the scores are acceptable under the applicable Rules of Handicapping.
Is an Initial Handicap Index the average of my first three scores?
No. With three Score Differentials, the calculation uses the lowest one and applies the table’s 2.0 adjustment. The result is rounded to the nearest tenth; later differentials change the table calculation as the scoring record grows.
Can I use an Initial Handicap Index in match play?
Yes, once allocated, it can feed the Course Handicap and Playing Handicap calculation for match play. The applicable handicap allowance and competition terms still matter, so do not assume the full Index is the number of strokes given in the match.
