Meaning

Low Net is the competition result awarded to the player with the lowest net score. A net score is the gross score after the player's applicable handicap strokes are subtracted, so competitors with different abilities can be compared on a handicap basis.

How it matters in match play

Low Net is usually a stroke-play competition or prize category, not a separate match-play format. In handicap match play, however, net scores are used hole by hole: the player with the lower net score wins that hole. A club may also compare overall net totals as a house competition, but its Terms of the Competition should say how that result is decided.

Common questions

What does Low Net mean in golf?

It means the lowest handicap-adjusted score in the competition. Subtract the applicable handicap strokes from each player's gross score, then compare the resulting net scores.

Is Low Net the same as match play?

No. Low Net normally describes a result or prize in a handicap stroke-play competition. Match play is decided by holes won, lost or tied, although handicap match play uses lower net scores to decide each hole.

How do you calculate a Low Net score?

Use the Playing Handicap required by the event, then subtract it from the gross score. For example, 86 gross minus 14 handicap strokes equals 72 net. The lowest valid net score is Low Net.
