Meaning

Match Loss means the outcome in which a player or side is defeated in match play. A match is lost when the opponent leads by more holes than remain, the player concedes the match, or the player is disqualified under the applicable Rules or Terms of the Competition.

How it matters in match play

Match Loss is decided by holes won, lost or tied, rather than by the total number of strokes over the round. A player loses once the opponent's lead is greater than the holes left, or earlier if the player concedes. If the match is tied after the final hole, the Terms of the Competition determine whether it is extended or ends tied.

Common questions

Does Match Loss mean losing one hole?

No. Losing one hole is a Lost Hole and changes the match score. Match Loss is the final outcome of the whole match, reached when the opponent's lead exceeds the holes remaining, or when the match is conceded or otherwise decided under the Rules.

When is a match officially lost in match play?

Under Rule 3.2a(3), the opponent wins when their lead is greater than the number of holes left, or when you concede the match or are disqualified. The result becomes final in the manner set by the Committee, such as recording it on an official scoreboard.

Can a player concede a match before the final hole?

Yes. Rule 3.2b allows a player to concede the match at any time before its result is decided, including before the match starts. A concession must be clearly communicated and is final; it cannot be declined or withdrawn.
