Meaning
A Match Result is the recorded outcome of a match-play contest: one player or side wins, the match is halved, or the result is otherwise settled under the competition's Terms of the Competition. Match play is decided by holes won, lost or tied, not total strokes across the round.
How it matters in match play
The result records the final hole relationship and settlement, such as Alex winning 3 and 2, Alex winning 1 up after 18 holes, or a halved match where the competition permits a tie. Under Rule 3.2a, a player wins once ahead by more holes than remain; a tied match is normally extended hole by hole unless the Terms of the Competition say otherwise.

Common questions
How is a match-play result decided?
The player or side that wins more holes wins the match when the lead is greater than the number of holes left. A concession or disqualification can also decide the match under Rule 3.2a(3).
What does 3 and 2 mean in a Match Result?
It means the winner was three holes ahead after the 16th hole, with only two holes remaining. The match ended at that point because the trailing player could no longer catch up; it is not a dormie result.
Can a Match Result be a tie after 18 holes?
It can be, if the Terms of the Competition allow the match to end tied. Otherwise, Rule 3.2a(4) provides for the match to be extended one hole at a time until there is a winner, subject to the stated competition terms.
Does the Match Result depend on total strokes?
No. Match play compares each hole, using gross or net scores as applicable, and the result is based on holes won, lost or tied. Total strokes across all holes do not by themselves determine the winner.
When does a Match Result become final?
Under Rule 3.2a(5), it becomes final when the result is recorded on an official scoreboard or other place identified by the Committee, or reported to a person identified by the Committee.
Is Match Result an official Rules term for every competition?
It is a useful plain-English label for the outcome. The exact settlement can vary because the Terms of the Competition may specify whether a tie is allowed or how a play-off or extended match is run.
