Meaning
A Match Win is the result recorded when a player or side wins a match-play contest. Under the Rules of Golf, that happens when the lead is greater than the number of holes left, the opponent concedes the match, or the opponent is disqualified.
How it matters in match play
A Match Win is decided by holes won, lost or tied, not by adding every stroke for a round. The winner may finish before the final scheduled hole once the lead is bigger than the holes remaining; for example, 3 up with 2 to play is a win. A match can also end through a valid concession or disqualification, and a tied match may continue one hole at a time when the Terms of the Competition require it.

Common questions
Is a Match Win based on total strokes?
No. In match play, the players compete hole by hole. The match winner is the player or side with a lead greater than the number of holes remaining, rather than the lowest total stroke count.
What does 3 and 2 mean for a Match Win?
It means the winner was 3 holes ahead after 16 holes of an 18-hole match, with 2 holes remaining. The lead could not be overturned, so the match ended and the result was a 3-and-2 Match Win.
Can a concession produce a Match Win?
Yes. A player may concede the match at any time before its result is decided. That concession ends the match under Rule 3.2a(3), subject to the Rules and the competition’s procedures.
Can a Match Win happen before the last hole?
Yes. Once a player leads by more holes than remain, the result is decided and play stops. A result such as 2 and 1 is an ordinary early finish in an 18-hole match.
What happens if the match is tied after the final hole?
The match is extended one hole at a time until there is a winner when the Terms of the Competition provide for an extended match. The terms can instead specify another way to resolve the tie.
Is Match Win an official Rules term?
It is a clear descriptive label for a match result, rather than a separately defined scoring format. The governing result provisions are in Rule 3.2a, including winning by more holes than remain, concession and disqualification.
