What is Modified Stableford in golf? Modified Stableford is a points-based form of play that rewards better hole scores with more points and penalises poor scores by subtracting points. Illustrative example: using the common table, Alex scores a birdie, par and bogey over three holes, earning 4 + 2 - 1 = 5 points; the competition winner is the player with the higher total after the agreed round.

Meaning

Modified Stableford is a points-based form of play that rewards better hole scores with more points and penalises poor scores by subtracting points. The Committee sets the points table. A common example awards four points for a birdie, two for a par and minus one for a bogey or worse.

How it matters in match play

Modified Stableford is normally a stroke-play points competition, not a match-play contest decided by holes won and lost. If two players use it head-to-head as a casual game, they should agree the points table and whether the higher total wins before starting; that is an arrangement of the game, not a separate Rules of Golf match-play scoring system.

Common questions

Is Modified Stableford the same as Stableford?

They are related points formats, but Modified Stableford changes the rewards and may subtract points for poor scores. The Committee must publish the table for the competition; the R&A example gives four points for a birdie, two for a par and minus one for a bogey or worse.

Is Modified Stableford match play?

No. Under Rule 21.1, Stableford is a form of stroke play in which the total points decide the winner. Friends can compare totals head-to-head as a house arrangement, but that does not turn the format into hole-by-hole match play.

Who decides how many points each score is worth?

The Committee sets the fixed target and competition scoring terms. Players should check the Terms of the Competition or scorecard before playing, because a club or event may publish a different Modified Stableford table.

Can a Modified Stableford score be negative?

It can be, if the published table subtracts points for poor holes. The R&A’s Modified Stableford example expressly includes minus one for a bogey or worse, but the competition’s published terms control the actual table.

Does Modified Stableford use handicaps?

A competition may include handicap terms, but the allowance is not universal for every Modified Stableford event. The Committee should state the applicable allowance and calculation method in the Terms of the Competition rather than assuming the ordinary Stableford recommendation applies.
