What is Net Par in golf? Net Par is a hole score equal to the hole's par after adding or subtracting the handicap strokes applied to that hole. On a par-4 hole, Alex receives one Handicap Stroke, so Alex's Net Par is 5; if the local authorised procedure permits Net Par for that unplayed hole, 5 is the handicap score recorded for it.

Meaning

Net Par is a hole score equal to the hole's par after adding or subtracting the handicap strokes applied to that hole. For example, par 4 with one received handicap stroke has a Net Par of 5. It is a World Handicap System term, not a separate match-play scoring format.

How it matters in match play

Net Par does not decide who wins a hole in ordinary match play: the match uses the strokes and competition terms set for that event. It matters for handicap administration when a hole is not played, including a match that finishes early, but current WHS procedure generally uses an Expected Score for unplayed holes in a 10-to-17-hole submission. Net Par may apply only in limited circumstances approved by the local Allied Golf Association, so it should not be applied automatically.

Common questions

Is Net Par the same as par?

No. Par is the expected score for a scratch player, while Net Par adjusts that par for the Handicap Strokes applied to the player on the hole.

Is Net Par still used for every hole a player does not play?

No. Under the 2024 WHS approach, Expected Score is the default for holes not played in a 10-to-17-hole submission. Net Par can be an option only in very limited circumstances and subject to local Allied Golf Association approval.

Does Net Par decide the result of a match-play hole?

No. It is a handicap-administration concept. Match-play results are settled under the competition's match-play terms and the strokes allocated to the players; do not treat Net Par as an automatic hole result.

How do I calculate Net Par?

Start with the hole's par, then add the Handicap Strokes the player receives on that hole. If a plus-handicap player gives a stroke back, apply the relevant subtraction instead.

Is Net Par the same as Net Double Bogey?

No. Net Par is par adjusted by handicap strokes. Net Double Bogey is par plus two strokes adjusted by handicap strokes and is the maximum hole score for an established Handicap Index under Rule 3.1.

Can I use my Playing Handicap to calculate a handicap Net Par?

Do not assume so. The WHS rules distinguish competition Playing Handicap from the handicap calculations used for score adjustment, and the applicable procedure and local authority instructions should be followed.
