What is Net Score in golf? A net score is a player's gross score after subtracting the handicap strokes applicable to that hole or round. Illustrative example: Alex scores 90 on a par-72 course and has a Course Handicap of 18, so Alex's net score is 72; on a hole where Alex receives one Handicap Stroke, a gross 5 becomes a net 4.

Meaning

A net score is a player's gross score after subtracting the handicap strokes applicable to that hole or round. It lets golfers with different demonstrated abilities compare results on a handicap basis. The correct strokes and calculation basis depend on the competition's authorised format and Terms of the Competition.

How it matters in match play

Net Score matters hole by hole in handicap Match Play. Handicap strokes are allocated by hole, and the player with the lower net score wins that hole; equal net scores halve it. A match therefore is not decided simply by comparing total net scores, although a competition may use handicap strokes under its stated format and conditions.

Common questions

How do you calculate a net score in golf?

Subtract the handicap strokes applicable to the round or hole from the gross score. For example, a gross 90 with 18 applicable strokes produces a net 72. In an actual competition, use the handicap and allowance specified for that authorised format.

Is net score the same as gross score?

No. Gross Score is the strokes actually taken, including applicable penalty strokes. Net Score is that gross result adjusted by the handicap strokes used for the competition, so the two numbers can differ.

How is Net Score used in match play?

In handicap Match Play, strokes are allocated by hole. Compare each player's net score on that hole: the lower net score wins, while equal net scores produce a halved hole. The relevant Playing Handicap and allocation should come from the competition conditions.

Does a lower total net score always win a match?

No. Match Play is settled by holes won, lost or tied. Net scores are compared on each hole when handicap strokes apply; the match result depends on the accumulated hole results, not just a final total.

Which handicap number is used to make a net score?

Use the handicap number and allowance required by the format and Terms of the Competition. The Rules of Handicapping distinguish Course Handicap from Playing Handicap; the latter applies the format's handicap allowance for equitable play.

Is Net Score an official Rules of Golf term?

Yes. Rule 3.1c describes net score as gross score adjusted for the player's handicap strokes. The exact handicap procedure can still depend on the competition format and its stated conditions.
