Meaning

Quota Game is a casual points competition in which each golfer tries to finish above a personal target, or quota. A common version awards points for hole scores and sets the quota at 36 minus the player's Course Handicap, but clubs may use different targets, points and adjustment rules.

How it matters in match play

Quota Game is usually an individual or team points contest rather than head-to-head Match Play: players compare their totals against their own quotas. It can be played alongside a match, but the quota does not decide Won Hole, Lead or Match Result unless everyone agrees that house rule beforehand. Set the point scale, quota method, handicap basis and settlement before teeing off.

Common questions

Is Quota Game an official Rules of Golf format?

No special Quota Game procedure appears in the Rules of Golf. The R&A lists defined forms such as Stableford, Maximum Score and Par/Bogey, and says other forms can be adapted. Treat Quota as a casual house format and publish the agreed conditions before play.

How is a Quota Game target usually calculated?

A common convention is 36 minus the player's Course Handicap. A Course Handicap of 10 therefore gives a quota of 26. Some organisers instead start the player with handicap points and aim for 36, which is mathematically equivalent when the same point scale is used; confirm the method with the organiser.

What points do players receive in Quota Game?

One documented club version awards 1 point for a bogey, 2 for a par, 4 for a birdie and 8 for an eagle, with double bogey worth zero and worse scores handled by that league's rule. Those values are not universal, so agree the scale and treatment of higher scores first.

Does Quota Game use a WHS handicap allowance?

There is no universal WHS allowance specifically for Quota Game. The WHS table gives recommendations for named formats, including 95% for individual Stableford and 100% for individual Match Play. A Quota organiser should state the handicap basis and any adjustment rather than automatically borrowing an allowance.

How does a Quota Game winner get settled?

Rank players by points above quota, from highest to lowest. If money is involved, agree the stake, tie-break and payout before play; for example, a $5 entry could pay the highest positive margin, but that is a house settlement rather than a Rules of Golf requirement.

Can Quota Game be played by teams?

Yes, some organisers add each player's result above or below quota to produce a team total. Decide whether all players use individual quotas, how team ties are broken and whether the game is individual or team scoring before starting.
