Meaning
A round robin is a competition arrangement in which each listed player, team or side plays the other entrants, usually across scheduled matches. It is a structure for organising a field, not one single scoring method: the matches may use match play or another approved format.
How it matters in match play
In match play, a round robin replaces a knockout draw with a series of head-to-head matches. The organiser must publish the entrants, fixtures, match format, handicap terms and method for ranking tied records. A round robin can lead to a final or play-off, as Golf Australia’s Victorian Pennant description illustrates; those event terms, rather than the phrase itself, determine the competition result.

Worked example
Alex, Ben, Chris and Dana play a four-player round robin: each has three matches, so the schedule contains 6 matches in total; Alex wins 2, halves 1 and loses 0, giving a 2.5-point record if the event awards 1 point for a win and 0.5 for a halved match.

Common questions
Is Round Robin a scoring format?
No. It is a scheduling and competition structure. The organiser still needs to state whether each fixture uses Match Play, Stroke Play or another format, and how wins, halved matches and ties are ranked.
How many matches are in a four-player Round Robin?
If every entrant plays every other entrant once, there are 6 matches: Alex-Ben, Alex-Chris, Alex-Dana, Ben-Chris, Ben-Dana and Chris-Dana. Each player therefore plays 3 matches.
How are handicaps applied in a Round Robin?
There is no single Round Robin allowance. For individual match play, WHS Appendix C recommends 100% of the applicable Playing Handicap, with the lowest Playing Handicap set to zero relative to the others; the Committee must state the terms for the event and any different format.
Does a Round Robin always have a final?
No. It may finish when the round-robin standings are settled, or the Terms of the Competition may add a final or play-off. Golf Australia describes Victorian Pennant as round robin followed by a Final, which is an event arrangement rather than a universal requirement.
What happens if players finish level in a Round Robin?
The published Terms of the Competition should provide a Tiebreaker, such as a play-off or an ordered countback. Do not assume one method: the round-robin label does not prescribe how tied records are resolved.
Can a Round Robin use teams instead of individuals?
Yes. The entrants can be individuals, pairs or teams. The organiser should identify the sides, fixture list, match format and any handicap method clearly so a Team Match Play event is not confused with an individual field.
