Meaning
The Ryder Cup Format is a team match-play competition between Europe and the United States. It combines pairs sessions—Four-Ball and Foursomes—with Singles matches. Each match is decided hole by hole, while the event winner is the team that earns more points under that edition's Terms of the Competition.
How it matters in match play
Every Ryder Cup match uses match-play scoring: the side or player that wins more holes wins the match, and a tied hole is halved. Four-Ball uses each partner's own ball and counts the lower score; Foursomes uses one ball per side with partners alternating strokes; Singles is one player against one player. The event schedule and points arrangements are set for the edition.

Worked example
In an illustrative match, Alex and Ben win 3 holes, Chris and Dana win 2, and 1 hole is halved, so Alex and Ben win the match 3 and 2; if that match is worth one event point, their team receives one point.

Common questions
How many match types are used in the Ryder Cup Format?
The recognised match types are Four-Ball, Foursomes and Singles. A particular edition's schedule can set how many matches of each type are played and in what order, so check that event's official Terms or format announcement.
How is a Ryder Cup match scored?
A match is scored by holes, not by adding all strokes for a final total. The lower side score wins a hole in Four-Ball or Foursomes, and the lower player's score wins in Singles. A tied hole is halved; event points are then assigned under the competition's terms.
Is the Ryder Cup Format the same as ordinary team golf?
No. It is a named team event that uses several match-play forms in one competition. The underlying Rules of Golf describe the forms, but the Ryder Cup's team selection, schedule, points and other event arrangements are competition-specific rather than a universal format for every club day.
Do Ryder Cup matches always play extra holes?
Do not assume that they do. Whether a tied match is halved or extended is set by the event's Terms of the Competition. The official 2025 PGA TOUR explainer states that Ryder Cup matches that were tied after 18 holes each received half a point and did not play extra holes.
What is the difference between Four-Ball and Foursomes in this format?
In Four-Ball, both partners play separate balls and the side uses the lower score on each hole. In Foursomes, partners share one ball and alternate strokes, including alternating who tees off. Both can be played as match play under the Rules of Golf.
