Meaning

Score Submission is the process of entering an acceptable golf score into a player’s scoring record for a Handicap Index. The submission should contain the required round details, follow the authorised format and local certification procedure, and be made promptly after play.

How it matters in match play

A match-play round can be submitted for handicap purposes only when it meets the World Handicap System conditions and the format is authorised in the relevant jurisdiction. Match result and handicap posting are separate: winning a match does not by itself make a score acceptable, and a conceded hole or match may affect what scores can be recorded. Check the local association’s procedure.

Common questions

Who can submit a score for handicap purposes?

The player can submit it, as can the Handicap Committee, the competition Committee, or another person authorised by the player. The submission still has to meet the Rules of Handicapping and the jurisdiction’s certification procedure.

When should I submit a golf score?

Submit it as soon as possible after finishing the round on the day of play and before midnight local time. A late submission may miss the next day’s Handicap Index update and the daily Playing Conditions Calculation, although the score is still handled under the applicable late-posting provisions.

What information is needed when submitting a score?

The WHS Rule 4.1 list includes hole-by-hole scores (strongly recommended), an adjusted gross score or Stableford points, the date played, and the Course Rating and Slope Rating for the tees used. Par and each hole’s Stroke Index are also required where applicable.

Does every match-play score have to be submitted?

No. The round must first qualify as an Acceptable Score under Rule 2, including the authorised format and other playing conditions. National Associations choose formats within the WHS framework, so local requirements can matter.

Can someone else submit my score?

Yes. The Handicap Committee, the competition Committee, or another person authorised by the player may submit an acceptable score. The player remains responsible for following the relevant process and certifying scores as required.

What happens if I submit a score late or out of order?

The score should be placed in the scoring record in the correct chronological order, and the published Playing Conditions Calculation adjustment for the round’s course and date should be applied when relevant. Repeated untimely submission may be investigated by the Handicap Committee.
