Meaning
Scoring Average is the mean number of strokes a player takes per completed round over a stated sample. Add the round scores and divide by the number of rounds; state whether the figures are gross or adjusted, because course difficulty and scoring rules can affect comparisons.
How it matters in match play
Scoring Average is not the scoring unit that decides a match. Under Rule 3.2, Match Play is settled hole by hole by comparing each player's score, including any applicable handicap strokes, while a Scoring Average can only be a retrospective comparison across rounds. A match report should therefore record the Match Result separately rather than infer it from an average.

Worked example
Alex's four illustrative 18-hole Round Scores are 84, 79, 82 and 83: 328 total strokes divided by 4 rounds gives a Scoring Average of 82.00 strokes per round; this example is editorial, not historical player data.

Common questions
How do you calculate Scoring Average in golf?
Add the scores included in the sample and divide by the number of rounds. For example, 328 strokes over four completed 18-hole rounds produces an average of 82.00. Say whether the figures are gross, net or adjusted before comparing them.
Is Scoring Average used to decide a match?
No. Match Play is decided hole by hole, not by the players' average over previous rounds. A Scoring Average may provide background about consistency, but it does not replace the hole scores or the final match result.
Is Scoring Average the same as a WHS Handicap Index?
No. A simple scoring average is an arithmetic summary of scores. A WHS Score Differential accounts for Course Rating, Slope Rating and the Playing Conditions Calculation, and the Handicap Index is calculated under the Rules of Handicapping. They are different measures.
Can I compare Scoring Averages from different courses?
Only cautiously. A raw average describes strokes taken, but it does not by itself adjust for course difficulty, tees, conditions or the number of holes. For handicap purposes, use the applicable Score Differential rather than treating raw averages as equivalent performances.
Does Scoring Average have an official Rules of Golf definition?
Not as a defined term in the Rules of Golf or the WHS definitions consulted here. It is a common statistical label; competitions may publish their own reporting method, so check the relevant Terms of the Competition or statistics provider.
