Meaning
Scrambling is a scoring statistic: the percentage of holes on which a player misses the green in regulation but still makes par or better. It measures the outcome after a missed green, rather than a particular club, shot type or technique.
How it matters in match play
In match play, Scrambling is a useful personal performance measure, not a separate way to decide a hole. If Alex misses the green and makes par while Ben makes bogey, Alex wins that hole; if both make par, the hole is halved. A player can track Scrambling across the round, but the match result still depends on holes won, lost or halved.

Common questions
Does Scrambling mean getting up and down?
Not exactly. The standard statistic counts par or better after a missed green in regulation, regardless of whether the player chipped, putted, hit another full shot or holed out. ‘Getting up and down’ is a useful informal description, but it is not the complete statistical definition.
How do I calculate Scrambling percentage?
Divide the number of holes where you made par or better after missing the green in regulation by the number of greens in regulation you missed, then multiply by 100. For example, 6 successful holes from 10 missed greens equals 60%.
Is Scrambling the same as Scramble?
No. Scrambling is an individual scoring statistic. A Scramble is a team format in which players choose among shots and continue from the selected location; its handicap treatment and playing procedure are separate house or competition matters.
Does Scrambling have an official Rules of Golf definition?
No specific Rules of Golf rule defines this performance statistic. Providers may present the statistic in slightly different reporting systems, so state the denominator clearly and do not treat Scrambling as a Rules of Golf format or handicap allowance.
Can Scrambling decide a match by itself?
No. It can explain how a player saved holes after missing greens, but the match is settled by the agreed scoring method and the holes won, lost or halved. Scrambling is supporting performance information, not the match result.
