Meaning
A Scratch Division ranks results without handicap strokes. It normally uses gross strokes in stroke play or matches played without handicap strokes in match play. Competition terms specify entry criteria and ties; the label does not create a separate format.
How it matters in match play
Scratch Division is not a separate form of match play. It is a competition category applied to a match-play event, usually meaning no handicap strokes are given or received. Under the Rules of Golf, players in ordinary match play win holes by taking fewer strokes, while handicap match play uses net scores after strokes are applied. The event's Terms of the Competition should state which division and scoring basis applies.

Worked example
In an illustrative 18-hole Scratch Division match, Alex takes 4 strokes and Ben takes 5 on the first hole, so Alex wins that hole and is 1 up; no handicap stroke changes the comparison.

Common questions
Is a Scratch Division the same as a Scratch Competition?
Often, but not always in wording. Scratch Competition is the Rules of Golf term for competition where the handicap is not applied to the score. Scratch Division is usually an organiser's label for one section of an event, so check that event's Terms of the Competition.
Do players receive handicap strokes in a Scratch Division?
Normally no. A scratch section compares gross scores or, in match play, the strokes taken on each hole without handicap strokes. The organiser must publish any different condition before play.
Can a Scratch Division use match play?
Yes. Scratch describes the handicap basis, not whether the event is stroke play or match play. In scratch match play, the player taking fewer strokes on a hole wins it; the match result is then determined by holes won, lost or tied.
Does a Scratch Division mean every player has a zero Handicap Index?
No. It normally means handicaps are not used to calculate the competition result. Players may still hold different Handicap Indexes, and an organiser may set separate eligibility requirements.
How are ties settled in a Scratch Division?
There is no single universal tie method for every event. The committee's Terms of the Competition may specify a play-off, countback or another permitted procedure, so read the published conditions.
Is Scratch Division an official Rules of Golf format?
No separate format called Scratch Division is created by the Rules of Golf. It is a competition-section label; the underlying event still uses a recognised form such as stroke play or match play and must state its conditions.
