What is Shamble in golf? A Shamble starts with every team member teeing off and selecting a preferred drive. On a par-4, Alex, Ben, Chris and Dana select Alex’s tee shot; from that spot they record 5, 4, 6 and 5, so the team’s illustrative score is 4 for the hole.

Meaning

A Shamble starts with every team member teeing off and selecting a preferred drive. Players then play their own balls from that spot. The team commonly counts its lowest individual score, but the competition terms determine how many scores count.

How it matters in match play

Shamble is not automatically a match-play format. A Committee can arrange two Shamble teams to play hole by hole, but it should state how the selected drive, individual scores, handicap strokes and team score determine each hole. In a four-person Shamble, the USGA gives a 65% Course Handicap example; that recommendation is not a universal allowance for every Shamble or match-play event.

Worked example

On a par-4, Alex, Ben, Chris and Dana select Alex’s tee shot; from that spot they record 5, 4, 6 and 5, so the team’s illustrative score is 4 for the hole. If the event is a $10-a-side match, the agreed Terms of the Competition—not the word Shamble alone—decide how that hole settles.

Common questions

Is a Shamble the same as a Scramble?

No. In a Shamble, the team selects a tee shot but each player normally completes the hole with their own ball. In a Scramble, the team normally selects a ball after each stroke and all players play from that selected spot, subject to the event’s terms.

How is a Shamble scored?

A common arrangement records the lowest individual score among the players after the selected drive. The Committee can set a different scoring method, such as counting two scores, so the published Terms of the Competition should be checked before play.

What handicap allowance applies to a Shamble?

There is no single allowance that applies to every Shamble. USGA committee guidance gives 75% of each player’s Course Handicap as a possible two-person selected-drive allowance and 65% as a possible four-person allowance. The event should specify its allowance and calculation basis.

Can a Shamble be played as match play?

Yes, if the Committee sets it up as a team match and explains how each team’s hole score is compared. Shamble describes the selected-drive format; it does not itself decide whether the result is by holes, total strokes or another agreed scoring unit.

Does every player have to use the selected drive?

In the common Shamble arrangement, all players play their next shots from the selected drive. Local event terms may add restrictions or use a different procedure, so players should follow the Committee’s instructions rather than assume a universal house rule.

Is Shamble an official Rules of Golf format?

Shamble is a recognised selected-drive competition format in USGA committee guidance, but it is not a standalone format with one globally fixed set of terms in the Rules of Golf. The Committee must define the competition conditions, including scoring and handicaps.
