Meaning
A Shotgun Start is a tournament starting arrangement in which groups begin at the same time from different holes, rather than leaving one group at a time from the first tee. It can help a large event get players on the course together and finish at broadly similar times.
How it matters in match play
In match play, a Shotgun Start changes where and when each match begins, not how holes or the match result are scored. The Committee can set starting times, groups and starting points; each player still plays with the opponent in the same group. The event’s Terms of the Competition should explain the starting arrangement, pairings and any local logistics.

Worked example
For an illustrative 18-hole event, Alex and Ben start their match on the 4th hole at 8:00 am while Chris and Dana start on the 13th at 8:00 am; each side then follows the course in order and the match result is settled after all required holes.

Common questions
Does a Shotgun Start mean everyone starts on the 1st hole?
No. Groups are assigned different starting holes and begin at the scheduled time. A group might start on the 1st, 4th or 13th hole, depending on the event’s plan and available starting points.
Is Shotgun Start a scoring format?
No. It is a way to schedule the start of play. The competition may use match play, stroke play or another authorised format; the Shotgun Start itself does not change the scoring method.
Does a Shotgun Start make a match finish at the same time as every other match?
Not necessarily. Groups start together, but playing pace, searches, rulings and the number of holes required can differ. It is designed to help an event start and finish in a coordinated window, not to guarantee identical finish times.
Who decides the starting holes and time?
The Committee or event organiser sets the starting time, groups and starting points under the event’s Terms of the Competition. Players should follow the published Start List and be ready at the assigned point at the exact time.
Can a Shotgun Start be used for match play?
Yes. It can schedule several separate matches around the course. The arrangement does not turn the matches into one group or change the normal match-play method of deciding holes and the result.
Does every course use all 18 starting holes?
No. The number of starting points depends on the field, course layout, safety, staffing and the Committee’s plan. The phrase describes simultaneous starts from different holes, not a mandatory number of groups or holes.
