What is Stableford in golf? Stableford is a form of stroke play in which each hole earns points by comparing the player’s strokes, including penalties, with a fixed target score set by the Committee. On a par-4 hole, Alex receives one Handicap Stroke and scores 5, making a net 4 for 2 Stableford Points; Ben scores 4 off the stick for 2 points, so they tie that hole on points even though their gross scores differ.

Meaning

Stableford is a form of stroke play in which each hole earns points by comparing the player’s strokes, including penalties, with a fixed target score set by the Committee. The usual target is par, and the player or side with the most points after the round wins.

How it matters in match play

Stableford is not match play: it normally produces an individual or side points total rather than a hole-by-hole win, loss or halved result against one opponent. A club may schedule Stableford alongside a match or adapt formats, but the Committee must state the competition conditions; do not treat Stableford points as a Match Score.

Common questions

Is Stableford match play or Stroke Play?

Stableford is a form of Stroke Play under Rule 21.1. It awards points on each hole and ranks players or sides by total points, rather than deciding a separate match result on every hole.

How many points is par in Stableford?

Under the conventional points table, par is 2 points, one over the fixed target is 1, and one under is 3. The Committee sets the fixed target and competition conditions, so check the Terms of the Competition.

What handicap allowance applies to individual Stableford?

WHS Appendix C lists a recommended 95% allowance for Individual Stableford. It is applied to the unrounded Course Handicap as the final step in calculating Playing Handicap; the Committee specifies the allowance.

Can I stop playing a Stableford hole?

Yes, the Rules encourage a player to stop when the score will result in zero points. The scorecard may show no score or a score that results in zero points, subject to Rule 21.1 and the Committee’s procedures.

Does Stableford use gross or net scores?

It can be scratch or handicap play. In a handicap competition, the Committee applies handicap strokes to the hole score before calculating points; the competition conditions should state the method.

Is Stableford par the same as Stableford?

No. Ordinary Stableford awards points against a fixed target, usually par. Stableford par is not a safe substitute name for every competition; clarify whether the event uses Stableford or the separate Par/Bogey form covered by Rule 21.3.
