Meaning
A stake is the money or other value risked on an agreed bet. In a golf side game, it is the amount attached to each bet, hole, point or result. The stake is separate from the Rules of Golf and should be agreed before play.
How it matters in match play
A stake does not change who wins a match or how holes are decided under the Rules of Golf. Players may privately attach a stake to a match or side bet, but they should agree the amount, unit, tie treatment and settlement before starting. A club competition may impose additional terms, so a casual stake is not an official match-play rule.

Worked example
Alex and Ben agree on a $5 stake per hole with no carryovers. Alex wins three holes, Ben wins two and one is halved, so Alex is $15 up on won holes, Ben is $10 up on his wins, and Alex finishes $5 ahead overall.

Common questions
Is a stake part of the Rules of Golf?
No. The Rules of Golf govern the competition and the result of the match, not a private cash stake. Treat the stake as a separate house arrangement and agree it before play.
What does a $5 stake mean in a golf game?
It means $5 is the agreed amount at risk for the defined bet. Whether that is $5 per hole, point or match is a house decision, so state the unit clearly rather than assuming it.
Can a match have more than one stake?
Yes. Players can agree a main match stake and separate side bets, such as a per-hole stake and a birdie pot. Record each bet and its settlement method so the amounts are not confused.
What should players agree before staking money?
Agree the amount, what triggers payment, how halved holes or tied results are treated, whether carryovers or presses are allowed, and when the final settlement occurs. Local law and club policy may also matter.
