Meaning
Sunningdale is a casual match-play game that starts level without preset handicaps. When a side reaches the agreed deficit threshold, usually two holes down, the trailing side receives a stroke on the next hole. It is intended to keep a mixed-ability match competitive.
How it matters in match play
Sunningdale is itself a match-play arrangement, for singles or sides such as four-ball or foursomes. Players begin All Square, then apply the agreed self-balancing stroke only when the stated lead threshold is reached. The exact trigger and whether the stroke is one-off or continues are house rules, so settle them before teeing off; this is not the WHS allowance for an official handicap competition.

Worked example
Illustrative only: Alex and Ben start All Square; Ben wins holes 1 and 2 and is 2 Up, so under their agreed Sunningdale version Alex receives one Handicap Stroke on hole 3. Alex makes 5 strokes and uses that stroke for a net 4 against Ben's 4, halving the hole. Any $5 stake is a separate house agreement, not part of Sunningdale itself.

Common questions
Does Sunningdale use official handicaps?
Usually no. The commonly described version starts level and awards a temporary stroke when the agreed lead threshold is reached. That is a casual house arrangement, not a replacement for the WHS process in an official Handicap Competition.
When does a Sunningdale stroke apply?
A common version gives the trailing side one stroke on the next hole when the other side first goes two holes up. Some descriptions use a different trigger or continue the adjustment at larger leads, so agree the precise version before play.
Can Sunningdale be played for money?
Yes, if the players agree a separate stake and Settlement. Sunningdale does not prescribe a Stake, Pot, payout method or amount; write those terms down before the match and keep them separate from the match result.
