Meaning

A Team Captain leads a golf team and makes decisions permitted by the competition terms. These may include selecting players for rounds or matches, setting playing order and choosing partner pairings. The captain may also be a competing player.

How it matters in match play

In team Match Play, the captain can organise the team's line-up, including which players enter each match, the order of play and who partners whom, subject to the Committee's Terms of the Competition. A captain is not automatically entitled to give on-course Advice: that requires the Committee to allow and identify an advice giver under Rule 24.4, and a playing advice giver cannot advise while playing.

Common questions

Does a Team Captain have to be a player?

No. Rule 24.3 says the captain may be a player, so the role can also be held by a non-playing team leader. The competition's Terms of the Competition may set additional requirements.

Can a Team Captain give advice during a match?

Only where the Committee has adopted a Local Rule allowing an advice giver and the person has been identified to the Committee. If the captain is playing in that round, they cannot act as the advice giver while playing.

Can a Team Captain choose the playing order?

The captain may make that decision under Rule 24.3, but the Committee's Terms of the Competition can prescribe the order or other limits. Check the event terms before treating captain selection as unrestricted.

Is a Team Captain the same as the Committee?

No. The Committee controls the competition's form and Terms of the Competition. The captain leads their team and makes the team decisions that Rule 24 and those terms allow.

Can a captain change a team after matches start?

There is no universal Rule 24 permission for unrestricted changes after play starts. Any substitutions, changes of order or partner changes depend on the Committee's Terms of the Competition, so the event's published conditions govern.

Does every team competition need a captain?

Rule 24.3 says each team may name a captain; it does not require every competition to use one. The Committee's Terms of the Competition should state whether a captain is required and what decisions that person may make.
