Meaning
Team Match Play combines individual or partner matches into an overall team result. Each match is decided hole by hole. The Committee specifies match structure, points and ties; it is an umbrella arrangement rather than a single partner format.
How it matters in match play
Each contest remains match play: a player or side wins, loses or ties holes against the opposing player or side, while the team competition combines the resulting matches. Team Match Play may use singles, Four-Ball or Foursomes, so the playing method and any handicap allowance must be stated in the Terms of the Competition. Do not assume one allowance applies to every team event.

Worked example
In an illustrative four-match event, Alex's team wins two matches, loses one and halves one; if the Terms of the Competition award one point for a win and half a point for a tie, the team result is 2.5–1.5, not a single 18-hole score.

Common questions
Is Team Match Play the same as Four-Ball?
No. Team Match Play describes the wider team-versus-team competition. Four-Ball is one possible match format within it, where two partners form a side and each plays a separate ball; Foursomes or singles may also be used.
How is a Team Match Play result calculated?
The Committee states how match results become the team result, such as one point for a win and half a point for a tie. Add the points from the scheduled matches, then apply the published tie procedure if the teams finish level.
What handicap allowance applies to Team Match Play?
There is no single allowance for every event called Team Match Play. WHS Appendix C gives recommendations for specific formats, including 100% for individual match play, 90% for Four-Ball match play and 50% of combined team handicap for Foursomes; the Committee must state the applicable allowance.
Can Team Match Play use singles matches?
Yes. Rule 24 allows a team to comprise players competing as individuals or as sides. The Terms of the Competition should identify the matches, pairings, points and method for deciding an overall tie.
Does a team win every hole together?
Not necessarily. A scheduled match is scored under its chosen format, and the separate match results are then combined for the team competition. A team member's individual match result does not automatically represent the whole team.
Who decides the Team Match Play format?
The Committee decides the form of play, how the overall team score is calculated and whether a tie is allowed. A Team Captain may make team decisions such as pairings where the Terms of the Competition permit it.
