Meaning
A tiebreaker is the agreed method for deciding a competition that finishes level. In golf it may be an Extra Hole or Play-off, a fixed number of holes, or a result such as Countback where the Terms of the Competition allow it.
How it matters in match play
For an individual Match Play match tied after the final scheduled hole, Rule 3.2a(4) normally extends the match one hole at a time until someone wins, using the same order unless the Committee sets another. The Terms of the Competition may instead allow a tied result or specify a fixed-hole Play-off, starting hole, or other procedure. Handicap strokes in an extended match are applied by hole as in the round unless the Committee sets a different method.

Worked example
Alex and Ben are All Square after 18 holes; under their published terms they play the first Extra Hole, and Alex wins it, so Alex wins the match. This is an illustrative example, not historical player data.

Common questions
Is a tiebreaker automatic in golf match play?
Not in every competition. The default under Rule 3.2a(4) is to extend a match tied after the final hole one hole at a time, but the Terms of the Competition may permit a tie or specify a different Play-off method.
What is the usual match-play tiebreaker?
The usual method is sudden-death-style Extra Holes: the players continue one hole at a time until one player wins a hole. The holes normally follow their original order unless the Committee sets another order.
Can Countback decide a tied match?
Only if the Terms of the Competition provide for it. Countback is not the default procedure for an individual match tied after its final hole; the published terms must state how the tie is resolved.
Are handicap strokes used in a match-play tiebreaker?
In an extended match, handicap strokes are normally given by hole in the same way as during the round, unless the Committee sets a different method in the Terms of the Competition.
Is a tiebreaker the same as a Play-off?
A Play-off is one possible type of tiebreaker. The broader term covers any stated method for separating tied results, while a Play-off specifically describes additional competitive holes or another extra contest.
Does a tied match always end after 18 holes?
No. Unless the Terms of the Competition allow a tied result or prescribe another procedure, a match tied after the final hole is extended until there is a winner.
