Meaning
Umbrella is a four-player golf side game, usually two teams of two, that awards points for several achievements on each hole. In a common version, the hole number sets each point value, and a team that wins every category doubles that hole's points as an umbrella.
How it matters in match play
Umbrella is not a match-play format or a Rules of Golf scoring method. It is normally an agreed side game played alongside a round, often with two teams comparing points; if the underlying round is match play, the group must separately agree how handicap-adjusted scores and any tied categories count.

Worked example
Alex and Ben play Chris and Dana. On hole 5, Alex and Ben win the low individual score, low team total, both Greens in Regulation categories and the Birdie category, so they sweep 5 categories: 25 points become 50 under their agreed Umbrella rule. At $0.10 per point, the hole is worth $5.00 to the winning side.

Common questions
How many players do you need for Umbrella golf?
Four players is the usual arrangement: two teams of two. The commonly described version awards points to each team for low individual score, low team total, each partner's Greens in Regulation result and a team Birdie. Any other group size needs a clearly agreed adaptation rather than being treated as the standard game.
Why is it called Umbrella?
The name comes from the sweep rule. When one team wins all five commonly used scoring categories on a hole, its points are doubled. That doubling is called scoring an umbrella; it is a house convention, not an official golf rule.
How do you settle an Umbrella bet?
Agree the point value and settlement before teeing off. One documented version pays the difference between the teams' final point totals; another has all four players contribute to a pot and awards it to the team with most points. Stakes and sweep treatment are house rules.
Can Umbrella use handicaps?
It can, but the group must decide beforehand whether categories use Gross Score or Net Score and how a handicap stroke affects Birdie or Greens in Regulation claims. The sources describe handicap play as a variation, not a universal allowance or official WHS format.
Is Umbrella the same as Four-Ball?
No. Four-Ball is a recognised Rules of Golf form of play, while Umbrella is a points-based side game that may be played by two teams of two. A group can run Umbrella over a Four-Ball round, but the two labels describe different things.
Do all Umbrella games use the same five categories?
No. The commonly documented version uses five categories, but published descriptions also note variations such as longest drive, closest to the pin and Sand Save. Write the categories, ties, handicaps, sweep and settlement into the group's house rules first.
