Meaning
Winning margin is the advantage by which a player or side wins a match, normally expressed in holes rather than total strokes. In a result such as 3 and 2, the winner is three holes ahead when only two holes remain, so the match is already decided.
How it matters in match play
Winning margin is central to Match Play because the result is based on holes won, lost or tied. A match ends when the Lead is greater than the number of holes remaining, so a result may be written as 3 and 2 rather than a completed 18-hole stroke total. If the match is tied after the scheduled holes, it can continue hole by hole until a winner is established.

Common questions
Is winning margin measured in strokes or holes?
In Match Play it is normally expressed in holes, such as 2 Up or 3 and 2. Total strokes are the basis of Stroke Play, not the usual match result.
What does 3 and 2 mean as a winning margin?
It means the winner was three holes ahead with two holes still to play. Because the lead was greater than the holes remaining, the match was over after 16 holes.
Is 1 Up a winning margin?
Yes. If a player is 1 Up after all scheduled holes, that player has won by one hole. If the match is tied after the scheduled holes, it is not a winning margin unless the competition's procedure produces a winner in extra holes.
Does a concession always create a numerical winning margin?
No. A conceded match can end without a normal hole-based margin being recorded. The competition may specify how a conceded or disqualified match is entered on its result sheet.
Is Winning Margin an official Rules of Golf defined term?
The Rules explain when a match is won and how match results work, but they do not present Winning Margin as a separate defined term. Clubs and competitions may choose their own result-reporting conventions.
Can a winning margin change after the match is over?
The match result becomes final under the applicable match-play procedure. Any later correction or ruling is handled under the Rules and the competition's terms, rather than by casually changing the reported margin.
