Meaning
A Won Hole is a hole a player or side takes in match play. The hole is won when that player completes it in fewer strokes, including penalty strokes, than the opponent, or when the opponent concedes the hole or receives the general penalty.
How it matters in match play
A match is scored hole by hole rather than by adding every stroke across the round. In a scratch match, fewer strokes wins the hole; in a handicap match, the lower net score wins it after handicap strokes are applied. A concession also produces a Won Hole, and the result moves the match score one hole towards the player or side that won.

Common questions
What makes a player win a hole in match play?
The player wins when they complete the hole in fewer strokes, including penalty strokes, than the opponent. A conceded hole or the opponent receiving the general penalty can also decide the hole under Rule 3.2a(1).
Does a lower score always win the hole?
In a scratch match, the lower stroke total wins. In a handicap match, handicap strokes are given by hole, so the lower net score wins the hole. The relevant comparison is the hole result, not the players' running totals for the round.
Can a hole be won without both players holing out?
Yes. An opponent may concede the hole at any time before it is completed, including before the players start it. The concession is final and cannot be withdrawn under Rule 3.2b.
