Best first choice
Head-to-head match play. It is the clearest two-player game because each hole is a direct contest and a player can win the match before completing all 18 holes. It also has an established Rules of Golf framework, with handicap strokes applied by hole when playing a net match.
What to agree before play
Treating Nassau or skins house rules as if they were a single universal Rules of Golf format; write down the stake, tie and press terms. Using a four-ball allowance for a singles match: four-ball is a partners format, while individual match play has its own WHS recommendation. Forgetting that handicap strokes change the net result: agree the Playing Handicaps and stroke indexes before starting, rather than improvising after a hole is disputed.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Head-to-head match play | Two golfers compete hole by hole, so the result stays meaningful even when one player has a poor hole. |
| Stroke play | Each golfer totals their strokes for the round, making this the simplest full-round comparison for two players. |
| Stableford | Each golfer scores points against a fixed target on each hole, so a disastrous hole can be contained rather than deciding the whole round. |
| Par/Bogey | Each golfer wins, halves or loses holes against a fixed target such as par, giving a match-like result without a direct opponent comparison on every hole. |
| Nassau | A practical two-player side-bet arrangement with separate front-nine, back-nine and overall bets, provided both players agree the stakes and any press rules first. |
| Skins | A casual hole-by-hole pot can suit two players, but agree how ties carry forward and how the pot is settled before teeing off. |
Worked example
Illustrative singles match: Alex has a Playing Handicap of 12 and Ben has 18, so the difference is 18 - 12 = 6 strokes. Under the recommended individual match-play approach, Alex plays off zero and Ben receives one stroke on the six lowest-numbered stroke-index holes; if Ben makes a net 4 and Alex makes a gross 4 on stroke index 2, Ben wins that hole. The handicaps and stroke indexes are example figures, not real player data.

Common questions
What is the best golf game for exactly two players?
Head-to-head match play is the strongest default: each hole is a separate contest, and the match can finish as soon as one player leads by more holes than remain. Use stroke play instead when you want the full-round total to decide the result.
Can two golfers play Stableford?
Yes. Stableford is an individual stroke-play form in which points are awarded by comparing each hole score with a fixed target, normally par unless the Committee sets another target. The player with the most points wins.
How do handicaps work in a two-player match?
For individual match play, the recommended WHS allowance is 100% of the unrounded Course Handicap when calculating Playing Handicap. In general, the lower Playing Handicap is set to zero and the other player receives the difference, allocated by stroke index; competition Terms can specify the applicable method.
