Best first choice
Individual net Stableford. It lets all five players compete in one round without inventing teams or a five-player scramble allowance. The WHS recommendation is 95% for individual Stableford, applied to each player's unrounded Course Handicap before the Playing Handicap is calculated.
What to agree before play
Do not copy the 95% individual Stableford allowance into a five-player scramble or team pool; those formats need their own approved terms A singles match-play round robin requires ten separate matches for five players, so it is a series rather than one simultaneous five-player match Agree whether the result is gross or net, how ties are settled and where strokes are received before starting; the WHS allowance table is a recommendation and competition terms control
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Individual net stroke play | all five players complete the round and compare net totals, making this the cleanest one-round handicapped contest |
| Individual net Stableford | five players score points against par after handicap strokes, so one poor hole does not end the round |
| Five-player singles match-play round robin | schedule the ten head-to-head matches across rounds, with handicap differences set separately for each match |
| Two-versus-two match play with a rotating fifth player | use two-player sides and rotate the fifth player between matches, treating the rotation as a house arrangement rather than a five-player format |
| Five-player scramble with a committee-set allowance | it can keep the group together, but the committee must approve the handicap method because the WHS table does not list a five-player scramble allowance |
| Five-player best-ball team pool | rotate pairs or sides across matches and publish the scoring and allowance as local competition terms, not as a standard WHS five-player formula |
Worked example
For an individual match-play round-robin match, suppose Alex has a Playing Handicap of 10 and Ben has 18. Individual match play uses 100%, so Alex plays off zero and Ben receives 8 strokes, on the eight lowest stroke-index holes; if Ben wins a hole by one net stroke, that hole goes to Ben. This is one match in the five-player schedule, not a claim that all five play one head-to-head match.

Common questions
What is the best handicap game for five golfers in one round?
Individual net Stableford is the simplest choice when all five people want one shared round. Use the 95% individual Stableford recommendation from WHS Appendix C, then apply the resulting Playing Handicaps to the agreed Stableford scoring method.
Can five golfers play a handicapped match-play game together?
Not as one ordinary head-to-head match: match play is between a player or side and an opponent or side. A practical five-player option is a singles round robin, where each pair plays a separate match over multiple rounds and the group agrees how to rank the results.
Is there an official five-player scramble handicap allowance?
The USGA Appendix C table lists recommended allowances for two-, three- and four-player scrambles, but not five-player scrambles. A five-player scramble therefore needs competition-approved terms or a clearly disclosed house method; do not present a chosen percentage as an official WHS allowance.
